Steering wheel off center after warranty work to steering column
About 6 weeks ago I had to have the U joint in the steering column replaced under warranty on my 17 M240i xdrive. Meaning they had to disassemble the steering column.
Didn't really notice it until a couple weeks later due to not driving because of COVID, but the steering wheel is off by about 10 degrees. friend of mine sat in the car and made comment. While this isn't a big deal driving (tracks perfect no alignment issues) it will raise a red flag to any potential purchaser in the future. Contacted the dealer and the service writer want's to say it's alignment and no warranty. Well it's not alignment it's an improper reassembly issue from a warranty repair, as far as I can figure. Service manager is avoiding me. How hard is it to get this reset properly? Wanted to get some opinions before I go ballistic. |

was it the upper or lower coloum that was changed im fairly certain those shafts are master splined and you can't really install them wrong without serious damage to the splines. even the steering wheel is master splined, so they may he right in saying it could be an alignment issue to be honest

It is hard to imagine a dealer could do it but it certainly could have been put on off center.
You could fix it in 20 minutes but shouldn't have to. Take it back and ask for a manager.

It's simple really, wasn't like that prior to service, and now is! There's no way to say it was their work that was responsible and no way to say it wasn't like that when you brought it in! But they should in the context of "the customer is always right" clause, make every effort to keep you satisfied! If the manager doesn't offer resolution, escalate it to corporate! Be firm, but nice, and don't take NO for an answer! I was curious why when I brought my vehicle in for the first time I had seen another owner videoing their car as they gave it to the service dept., Lol... I was surprised because I can tell you that for me, that wouldn't be necessary! I would get satisfaction, but would allow the dealer to make things right first! Good Luck! |

yep. commonly noted by reviewers when it was released. replacing the u joint shouldn't have required any disassembly of the interior.

Judging from the sounds of your concern, it sounds like the Lower Shaft Was replaced do, simply because there is no U-Joint on the upper shaft. Yes no Removal of the interior is needed, but that shaft is master splined, meaning you can't mis-align it without seriously fucking something up. Hate to be that guy, but ya sounds like you need an alignment and not something the dealer did In my opinion Dont loose your shit on the dealer and or service manager if you dont understand the repair. No one likes being that guy, and no one wants to deal with people like that. If they did claim that it's not a repair issue, its an alignment issue and you still disagree with them then ask them to explain how and why. But like i said, they are going to tell you what i already said, the shaft is master splined and you cant install it incorrectly without causing severe damage to the upper shaft and or the Steering rack it's self. If a technician was capable of doing that then well they should find them selves a new a new career IMO.
