It also depends on the price point of the M2. If it's miles ahead of RS3 and A45 in overall terms there is no reason why it has to stay at £40k - it's an M car proper after all.

The 4 series and M2 will be aimed at two different markets as well. You buy an M car for a reason.

I expect if BMW get round to it the Sub-M range toppers of 3/4 series they will be diesels anyway. Even if no MP models come the current 335d and predicted 435d range toppers are aimed at different people to the M3 and M4, and the suspected M2.

Old 1 Series (E82): 125/128i, 135i, 135is
New 1 Series (F20): M135i
New 2 Series: M235i and M2 and probably some GC models in the future.

M235i is BMWs opportunity to do this. M2 needs to be more track focused

Confirmation of a diff in the M235i is brilliant news IMO. But, where does that leave the possible (more likely probable) M2? I'm guessing in the UK the M235i is going to start from around the £34k mark. So realistically specced at £36-38k. If rumours about an m2 costing a base £45k for a mere 40bhp premium I don't see why people are going to rush to trade their m performance models in. By the time it's released people are going to have mapped M235i's running 400+bhp. Surely it makes sense for BMW to either rethink a base price closer the 40k mark or offer around 380-400bhp.

The 45k number is for the US not UK.

There are plenty of ways to set the M2 apart from the M235i, even without a dedicated 4-cylinder M engine (which Scott said has been tested by BMW engineers).
The wide track, sharper steering rack and possibly CFRP body panels are all things that your average car buyer won't put on their car unless they are hardcore enthusiasts who know what they're doing.

Sure, you could get an M235i tuned to 400bhp and fit a LSD, harder suspension, better brakes, performance tires and a quad exhaust.. but unless you infinitely tinker with it, you will probably never get the same result as the BMW M engineers.

A 4-cylinder engine would keep weight and emissions (and subsequently price) down, while a 6-cylinder would provide you with a better sound and keep those BMW enthusiasts on the forums happy. Decisions, decisions...

the 2002 is definitely the most significant small car BMW ever made....the impact it had was huge. The E30 was a fine car...but nowhere near as iconic.

Hi all,

I've read several times that M235i would get different bushings. I doubt, I've read the same about the M135i and when I tested it it was clear to be untrue. Quick check on Realoem shows same bushings on a M135i and 125i. The difference is on the suspensions and sway bars, not more than that.

The M135i has a good steering and the Michelin PSS do their job well. The car is fast, but far from the experience you get from a 1M. The M135i suspensions are a major improvement over what we got from the previous 135i and I've found them even better than on the 1M even though softer (in fact I think slow speed bump/rebound have a perfect setup).

That said, you still feel those soft bushings, especially because the PSS have a lot of grip and setup of suspension is harder than in the past. It makes the front of the car a bit fuzzy and you're never sure where you're putting your tires. And this is not because of the electric steering that I believe to be near perfection.

I tested both the xdrive and RWD versions of the M135i, nice cars, fast cars but not M cars. The 2WD does not lack a mechanical LSD, thanks to Michelin PSS tires and their amazing grip (close to what you get from the Michelin PS Cup).

Currently, there are no possibilities to upgrade the bushings of the M135i. When BMW releases the M3/M4 there might some parts we'll be able to reuse, just like with the 135i in the past, but can't be sure.

I don't think the M235i will be that much different, so there's plenty of room for a proper M version.

Wait and see.
