BMW Maintenance Program - Is it worth the cost?

I just recently picked up a CPO 2016 M235i with 29,000 miles and the dealer tried to sell me a BMW maintenance program (72 months/100,000 miles) for $3500. The maintenance program would end in approx. 2.5 years and would include brakes, rotors, oil changes, belts, and spark plugs. The numbers don't seem to add up in my head, I feel like I would spend much less than this in maintenance for the items listed above. Is it worth the $3500 price tag for 2.5 years of maintenance on a M235i with 29,000 miles?

$3500 is a lot of dough. With that said, my previous 16' M235i needed front pads & rotors at 33k. They replaced the rear as well just before selling the car as a CPO at 44k miles. The car was never tracked.

I have to imagine front/rear pads and rotors replaced at the dealer would cost more than that.

Exactly what I'm saying, the brakes need replacing soon but my friend's dad works exclusively on BMW's so I'm sure I could get it done a lot cheaper through them. The rotors are still very close to the same thickness as they came new - 23.65mm and 29.45mm (new is 24 mm and 30 mm). And I know the oil changes won't be $3500 over 2.5 years being that I drive about 12k miles a year. Thanks for the response though man I appreciate it 👍🏼

bmays,

I think you are on the right track looking at having a qualified indie mechanic take care of these maintenance items. You should be able to save enough money to get a decent set of high performance tires and wheels. If you have the inclination, most maintenance items are relatively straightforward and can be handled with a modest set of tools, and a low profile hydraulic jack. There are plenty of good on-line tools as well to assist you if you choose to roll up your sleeves and dig in.

With the dealer, you are paying for the convenience, a decent loaner vehicle, good coffee in the commissary and the assurance that you are getting OEM parts and fluids (which of course you can buy yourself as well).

Good luck with your decision and congratulations on your purchase! You bought an awesome car...

They are betting that it will cost less than $3500. to maintain this car over the interval. I presume that the warrantee period/mileage specified is from zero, which means that you have about 36 months or 70K miles to spend that money on maintenance. If you have a good trusted indy mechanic, then walk away, no run away from this deal. It is highly unlikely that you will spend $3500 on maintenance over than period. Remember, this does not cover anything else.

You can very likely negotiate these numbers down. Mine is 6 years 75000 miles I think and I am fairly certain I got them down to $2K for it, plus they threw in a venture shield wrap.

I find the peace of mind is 100% worth it especially with the cost of new brake pads and rotors

Yes, I am actually planning attempting to do most of these repairs myself, I know there are plenty of YouTube videos instructing how to do so. Thank you for the advice, and thank you, I fell in love with it as soon as I test drove it!

Precisely, I went in yesterday and they tried to extend it to 3.5 years for $3500, which is a lot more appealing. But I still think I will just use an indie mechanic in the end if it is something that I cannot do myself. Thank you for the advice!

Hmmm 2k actually sounds like a great deal, I will call up a few more dealers and see what they can offer me. They tried to extend the warranty to 7 years/100,000 miles (would buy me 3.5 years of maintenance) which actually sounds a lot more appealing. I only drive about 12,000 miles a year, so at the end of my maintenance period I would have about 72,000 miles or so. Right now I have 29,000 miles and nothing has been changed except for the oil.

What about 3.5 years of maintenance? My car currently has 29,000 miles on it and none of the maintenance has been performed except the oil changes, at the end of this maintenance period I predict to have about 72,000 miles on the car. I still do not see this adding up to $3500 but I could be wrong.

At 3.5 years maybe if you get your work done at BMW. My car is a 15 and I don't even go to bmw for free maintenance because I'm tuned and don't want to deal with their BS. So far, I've paid for 3-4 oil changes, 2 brake flushes, manual trans flush and I've paid just under $1000 for all of it. I'm still on stock brakes and plugs but even with that, I'll be well below 3500.

Front and rear OEM M Sport rotors are between $500-$600. Pads are a couple hundred more. No way in hell you will get your money's worth by purchasing a $3500 maintenance plan. Oil changes cost about $90 to do yourself using OEM oil and filter or about $100-$150 at a good Indy or the dealership. You aren't likely to need new spark plugs during this period. Save your money and just pay for these things as they come up.

Easy to replace the rotors and pads at home. Should be able to get 4 rotors and 4 sets of pads for < $1K.

No, not worth. They will do everything they can (dealer) to avoid paying out. They are happy to take your money, but everything changes when they have to do the work. They sell you on the brakes. I had an X5, bought the maintenance plan. When they replaced the brakes, they stated the rotors were 0.5mm in spec, so just replaced the pads. I was pissed...

Never again!

Yep, it's their opinion on when to address maintenance items and they will do what they can to avoid those costs.

Save your money.

M rotors and pads cost me $2k. So if you track could to easily take advantage.

Otherwise it's obviously making them money or they wouldn't offer it
