Little Car Can Take a Hit

Well...my new to me M235 (only had it 3 months) was no match for being rear ended by a Silverado.

Luckily nobody was seriously injured and surprisingly the car was still drivable.

Waiting to hear if it's totaled or not.

It looks totaled to me. If it is, do they write you a check and still let you keep the car or does the insurance company typically take it and sell it at auction? Just curious how that works as I've never been in an accident. Glad to hear everyone was alright! They say rear-ending accidents can be some of the worst for passenger injury...

Hope you didn’t get a whiplash, that hurts just looking at the pictures. Was this at a stoplight or on the highway? Bet you the Silverado driver was texting...we need to have the heavy tickets given just like they do in Ottawa or what Illinois is implementing beginning July 1.

Whether repaired for you or totaled and auctioned I expect it will be repaired eventually. The good news is that there seems to be little reason to break into the paint on the fenders so the factory plating and paint will not be compromised.

Arthur Tussik would make that look good as new.

Well...turns out the car is NOT going to be a total loss. Anyone on here have any advice with a diminished value claim or what my next steps should be?

As much as I hate our litigious society, I'm contemplating getting a lawyer on this one.

Thoughts?

I'm getting sick watching this video. My 2006 325 had extensive frame damage after an accident. The insurance company wanted the car fixed the way this guy is doing it. Bend back and reinforce. My shop owner said no way. He'd never, ever fix a car like that let alone drive one. All those bent frame pieces need to be replaced. That's in fact what they did. Every frame piece forward of the passenger compartment was replaced. 2 months and about 23k. I confirmed this with a BMW certified shop. After the fix I had the car inspected by another frame expert. He was surprised at how well the repair was done. He said he fully expected to recommend I not even drive the car home as shotty repairs are what he normally saw.
BTW my frame repair never showed up on car Fax. But an accident that never happened did. Beware of Car Fax.

Possibly because the 3 Series, like other BMWs, doesn't have a frame? It is of unitized construction and the lower portion is a stamped floor pan. Pick-up trucks and some large SUVs are still body-on-frame construction. SAAB used to have a policy of not recommending repair to a damaged floor pan, considering that sufficient to declare total loss.

He likely means some or all of the parts on this page, including those generally referred to as the "frame rails": https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=41_2140.

I know it's a unibody. Unibody frame is maybe not technically correct. But how is often referred to. I've seen many CarFax reports that say frame damage on a unibody car.

Ha. Ya. All that plus more . In the end it all worked out. But really it should have been totaled. By the time the insurance figured it out, lots of $$ was already spent.
Anyway, the major point of my post was proper replacement is the key a safe rebuild. You want the car to act like the engineers designed it to begin with. And of course don't trust car fax 😉
