XDrive dsc off vs rwd dsc On
Hi,
Stupid question but i was just curious as i'm living in canada and it snows like these weeks what is harder to control XDrive dsc off vs rwd dsc On, im asking this cause i was planning on maybe switching to a manual m2 from 2017-18, but since even xdrive with dsc off is sliding everywhere when giving throttle(i know i shouldnt if i dont wanna slide ahhaaha but i love sliding i guess) but is a rwd only harder in the winter? Thanks. |

I'd say tires have more of an effect on your ability to drive in cold and harsh conditions. an experienced driver will for sure choose the rwd option since most cases of slipping will be correctable. one thing many fail to thin about is that both cars (assuming they have the same tires) will have the exact same braking distance. If anything the xdrive will have it worse due to it weighing more.
In any case, choose the car that you want! Winter tires will make any car manageable! |

Awd will always be superior in bad weather regardless..

Considering your location tag, I'm sure you know this, but 2WD on snow tires is far superior to AWD on any other type of tire.

Not a bad idea, but try not to get too used to AWD dynamics. You could be caught off-guard if you treat it like "AWD but less traction"; it's more complex than that, as I'm sure you know. Maybe buy xDelete to compare directly how your car drives in RWD mode vs xDrive

100% agree here. It helps but snow tires and awd is the best 👌

In DTC mode, or with DSC off, the AWD still behaves much like a RWD car. You can hang the tail out in corners or do doughnuts on a wet parking lot if you so desire. The dynamics of weight transfer apply much the same.
I'm not sure the difference in layout is that important compared to just the difference in how far the various nannies will let you go. DSC on is very interventionist, and will shut you down at the slightest hint of a slide. DTC mode will let you slide around a little, but will still correct if you get too far out of hand, and DSC off won't help you at all no matter what you do - you are on your own. You can choose any of these things regardless whether your car is RWD or AWD. It's more down to how comfortable you are with your driving IMO. |

I've DD'd RWD manuals in southern Ontario for a few cars now. We don't typically get buried in snow but winter is winter. Just drive like a normal person and you'll be fine. The traction control nannies work fantastic if you want a civilized drive. Or turn them off and learn to use your throttle as an analog control instead of a digital on/off switch. If you are only interested in 0-60 times in winter, stick to AWD.

Uphill does really suck from a stop and will be embarrassing even with winter tires. The LSD on the M2 will help.
Slow gradual throttle or DTC off spinning left to right wildly will get you going about the same speed in that situation. |

Buy what you like, put good tires on it, learn to drive it well - this applies no matter your chassis layout and irrespective of any modern control systems. None of them replace the actual driver. Cheers. |

I grew up with 5.0 Mustangs back in the 80s. All manuals, and all modded. They were still fun to drive in the winter. Put studded tires all around and they are scary fast even on slippery roads, I have no doubt an M2 would be even more so.
Manual and RWD is the classic sports car definition. If you have not had one, now would be the time because with the (excessive IMO) push to BEVs their days are probably numbered. Good luck and have fun! |
