Help me out, please, as I don't keep up with the multitude of BMW models. This one's a front-driver based upon the Mini's platform - is that right?

Looks like an economy car but with premium pricing, sorry, but this car definitely needs to get a separate forum, its gonna get a lot of hate. On the upside, at least it has analogue style gauges, although they do look cheap, but still better than the reverse tach of other bimmers.

Correct.

My local dealer can't wait to get the GC as it fits the $40K car price point thats been missing since the F30 320i went away. New G20 330i are starting around $50K which is too expensive for a lot of potential buyers. Time will tell how it sells but remember some people just want the BMW roundel on the hood.

In the US, xDrive is standard. It is a shared UKL BMWAG corporate platform, used by BMW brand for X1, X2, 2 GC, as well as Mini, such as for Countryman.

This is not the car for me, but I think we lose perspective on this forum. If your situation allows an entry-level 4-door luxury car, you don't wish a tall utility vehicle of any type, and the choices are the direct FWD/AWD competitors of Audi A3, Mercedes CLA/A220, or this Gran Coupe, I think the choice would be easy to avoid Audi, consider MB, and possibly prefer the BMW brand for driving dynamics in this segment. The segment is real and not having this entry would "leave money on the table" for BMW. Using the platform-mate of my wife's Mini Countryman S, which she loves, I can imagine the new Gran Coupe will be very pleasing to many consumers who will never spend a moment on any forum.

Would have been nice to have the hatch opening as in the 4GC - one reason I find our 4GC very practical. I guess maybe the extra weight for the opening mechanism was a factor. From the side view, looks like my daughter's Corolla, lol.

Interesting - I'd get the Audi over the CLA -the CLA truly is low rent.

After our disastrous 2016 A6 3.0T Prestige, when we "fell for a pretty face" but got a transmission and electrical features which defied repair, faulty brakes which Audi would not cover under warranty, and dishonest treatment, we will never step into any VW/Audi dealership again, no matter how attractive any one model seems. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...." You know the rest. We dumped the car at a significant loss of value just to be rid of it and them.

BTW, your assessment of the CLA is for the new 2020 refresh just launched or the original model (where I would agree with you)?

If you think this is a bad move on BMW's part, consider the upcoming iX3 full-electric SAV - the grille looks exactly like a KIA and it is made in China.

I think that is a great move, and I'm considering one to replace my 2018 330i Gran Coupe, with a lease ending in January, versus some other BEV. It's the long wheelbase version, so more room in back and it's rear wheel drive...perfect for where we would have it in the southwest. Don't paint China with a broad brush. The range of quality can be as different as the investment and quality of the management team and parent corporation...just like anywhere else in the world. Don't really care about the grille appearance variation.

New CLA and A Class look good and better than the 2GC but have horrible build quality, as a Merc fan I love the styling, but refuse to buy or recommend them because of that.

Here Jason Camissa highlights and shows off the horrid issues with the new CLA/A

I'd honestly take a GTI or Golf R over any of the entry level "luxury" cars.

If it wasn't produced by VWAG and one could have an iota of trust in the company, I'd agree they are great to drive...when they work.

My assessment is for the pre-refresh. Although I still like the Audi, over the 2020 CLA (which has indeed gotten better).

Golf R really is a great package. That's what I cross shopped my M240i against. The creamy smooth inline 6 and RWD is what sealed it.
