Does NY pay for destroyed wheels when it happens in the winter?

FYI, it is illegal and a ticketable offense to flash lights to warn of law enforcement running radar.

FYI it's pretty chickenshit to do this in any jurisdiction. Plus, you're drawing attention to yourself if you are exceeding the posted limit.

So do I. Problem is there are three huge ones on the way home. Every day I mark it and it never comes up the next day. Not sure if people are hitting not there but you can't miss them. They are at least 4-5" deep.

Ouch. I got to test out my run flats a couple of weeks ago when I hit a pot hole going about 50. Luckily no rim damage, just a nice tear in the sidewall.
The run flats did their job and let me limp the car home and then to the tire shop a few days later (I had to order the tires which took 1-2 business days, but of course this happened on a Friday right before a holiday weekend, so more like 5 days). I think the run flats are probably OK for an around town emergency, but I decided to buy a small spare to throw in the trunk for longer hauls (like shooting up to Los Angeles for a concert or something). I don't want to be 100+ miles away from home at 2am sitting on the side of the road. The spare I picked up is from http://modernspare.com/ It's the whole kit (spare, jack, tool) in a bag. Not the cheapest solution, but I needed something quick. It's worth a look in any case. |

Well...OF COURSE!!!
I've been caught-out by quite of few of them in my time: city, suburban, country, and in the middle of nowhere (e.g, US-87 W out of Clayton, NM - where, if you're serious about making time, you stop in at a gas station and ask "Where is he...now?" And the pump jockey knows! ). Many traps are as I think you're suggesting, which is that they're an inexpensive way to produce income for the local jurisdiction. Others are truly oriented towards slowing people down to keep them safe. In some jurisdictions, there simply is no longer sufficient funding to run proper patrols, and I think patrolling is the right way to control and influence the movement of traffic. I believe that's an issue worthy of concern, especially in major metro areas, where some drivers are way out of line. An example is the California Highway Patrol, which for decades was constrained by a fiscal prohibition on their use of radar, thereby leaving them with only one option: patrolling, at which they became remarkably effective. Due to reduced funding more than two decades ago, that was no longer an effective approach, and the CHP was finally allowed to purchase radar devices. After having been away for a number of years, I got nailed by a CHP officer sitting in the curve of a median, at which point I realized that all the people that had just passed me must have had radar detectors. No problem - I'm big on live and learn. In contrast is a ticket I got in a small town in a state that shall go unnamed. The town was a known speed trap in the classic sense: hilly country, 60 MPH limit rolling down the hills into town, and with a 25 MPH limit sign around a corner with very little distance to get your speed down. If you didn't...bingo, blue lights in your rear view mirror. The kicker was that the officer expected to get paid in his cruiser. I was new to the area and checked with some knowledgeable locals soon after. They said "Oh yeah, you must slow down long before that 25 MPH sign; otherwise, you'll get nailed. And the 'fine' is split this way: 1/3 to the officer, 1/3 to the court, and 1/3 to the town." Gives a whole new meaning to the term 'tourist trap', doesn't it. BTW, the officer was driving a very nice cruiser! My old man got nailed in another state far away from the one just described. At the time, he was nearing the end of his life, I was with him, and I think he was going like 4+ MPH over the limit. But, it was a small town in the middle of nowhere (there is a LOT of nowhere in the interior West), and I'm sure the officer had little real police work to do. Unlike the experience I had in the stop just described, my dad got an extremely friendly warning to make sure he followed the speed limit. The irony was the we'd lived in that part of the country a number of decades in the past, and in those days you could run as hard as you wanted. Contemporary notions of enforcement were virtually nonexistent in those olden days. It's truly a different world today.

It is not illegal to warm driver's of police activity, is considered speech under the Constitution and has been affirmed by the SCOTUS. You can flash all you like! Get a ticket for it, or worse, arrested and just be sure to litigate and you'll make a nice penny! Same goes for giving the "bird"... Protected speech no matter how some may consider it vulgar. And yes, most enforcement today has to do with revenue, not public safety!
Have fun! |

Back to the main topic: In NY State, you can get reimbursed for pothole damage if you can show that the authorities knew about this particular pothole for some specific period and did nothing about it. Since that is almost impossible to show, it is very hard to recoup the cost of pothole damage.
Been there, done that. |

BMW has insurance on wheels and tires, limited to first 5 years, a worthy expense IMO. Especially in NY, where it's ripe with potholes and the DOT does not know how to properly fix them anyways. The insurance also covers body damage such as door dings! They fix or replace... I bought it knowing the cost to replace.
The time period is 48 hours from reporting... There was one time, many moons ago while traveling into NYC over the Williamsburg Bridge, the roadway as you exited the bridge had a huge PH that any car in that lane could not avoid. Just past that traffic light cars were stacked pulling over from blowouts. It was a pouring rain storm as well, so you couldn't even see the hole. Traffic agents had the audacity to be standing there telling you that you could not stop there or be towed, and tow trucks were flying up to the spot like vultures. My passengers and I were on our way to a Major shindig, but we got out, popped the trunk and swapped the tire while telling the agent what to do with their rearside! Lol... A friend of mine who traveled that daily notified me that DOT was there the next day filling in the hole, so no way to recoup costs from the city. This of course was before the days of roadside assistance, hahaha OP, that is an amazing bend! I think you may want to have your suspension checked too, inspect for blown strut seals, bent parts, etc., as it looks like significant force hit that wheel. Best Regards |

Yes, the insurance is well worth it. Mine is about to expire, one reason I am planning to sell my wheels and tires, which are all in mint condition because they have been replaced under full insurance coverage, and put summer tires on my 17" winter wheels. These are much less prone to pothole disasters.
