16" Wheel Fitment

It's my understanding that the 228i with the base/standard brakes can fit 16" wheels.
However, the selection seems to be very scarce.
Are their clearance issues with certain 16" wheels?
I'm looking at 08-12 3-series 16" steel wheels for winter tires, but nobody, not even BMW USA, can confirm if they'll fit.
BMW USA should have dimensions drawings of all of these parts, but that's probably more work than they'd care to do for something such as this.
Can anybody enlighten me on this?

I see that Tire Rack sells 16" aluminum wheels for the 228i with base brakes, so maybe there are steel wheels that would fit. You might try calling them to see if they have any useful information for you.

I've talked to tire rack, BMW USA, and multiple BMW dealers.
Nobody can give me a definitive answer.
It's a real stumper, it seems.

I had the same question you did. I could not find the answer either had to pass. Any luck?

If you can find a tire store with one in stock they might try it on for you without putting a tire on it. You might have to purchase the wheels and cancel if they don't fit.
