Those of you bitching about this are just worried that someone is going to show up in one of these at a track day and spank you in your "real" BMWs...

I don't know, I'd rather have the car that's more fun to drive than the fastest.

Interior and practicality seem really nice... But the exterior... Meh... Would buy it over a Merc B if I had no other choice but... :-/
A question comes to my mind with this car, and it's 3-cylinder... When would this engine be available in the 1 series?

Sad, but true
Other than the 6 series gran coupe
None of the recent BMW designs have anything distinctive
New 3 series/4 series could almost be a facelift of the e90/92
5 series looks good, but nothing special
1 series front end is butt ugly
New x5 is a slight change from the old x5
It's almost like back in the bangle days they were trying too hard to be distinctive
And now they are playing it way too safe

Of the current lineups
Audi and MB have better looking models
;(

at worst they just kill the brand. M2 active tourer, lol not! ever
You know that comment doesn't make sense anymore
Judging by the new m3/m4
I don't think this applies anymore
This is all about selling as many cars as possible
Irrespective of if they are "the ultimate driving machine" or not

I think that opinion is entirely subjective, albeit I respect it but disagree.

My take would be whilst the 2 has a stupid name and they stretched the eyelids on the lights too much it is more aesthetically pleasing than the competition.
Audi models with the exception of the A1 and maybe the new A6 look so alike to me it is no wonder people use phrases like sausage factory looks. Mercedes in my opinion have started churning out some revolting looking cars the latest of which to me look unfinished e.g. very awkward lines around the headlights which are not parallel and seem to introduce visual tension for the sake of it (the now out of date C class is far more attractive than the extruded monster we saw recently).

Whilst we're not in a bangle style phase (which has some advantages), I think personally BMW are ahead overall in design in retaining characteristics yet introducing changes but without dropping their cars through the ugly tree.

Why don't you keep that crap in Germany, & send us the M135i hatchbacks, instead..

Why is BMW introducing this now..? And shouldn't this oddball suv wait for the big 1-series ("odd-series") release..? Or notably released this in China, not embarrass themselves in NA, with cheaply designed, unfocused crap like this.

I think I am on my last BMW..

I don't see what the fuss is about, it doesn't make any of the other cars in their range less great
I have no problem with a 520d despite the smaller engine. It's still a 5 series, still a RWD platform, and still provides a very high end ("ultimate") driving experience. But it seems BMW wants to create a car for everyone. That's fine if you want to be mediocre and target volume... but it's no longer the ultimate driving machine is it. Once you start heading towards the middle of the bell curve, where volume sales rule, you need to sacrifice quite a bit in the process... and we're seeing that here. For how long has BMW touted the importance of RWD and 50/50 balance in achieving the best driving dynamics? Heck, even xDrive is setup to drive like a RWD as not to sacrifice this philosophy. All be damned... FWD now from BMW. And why? To go down market, sell more cars, produce less expensive platforms, appeal to people who are afraid of RWD handling? No "ultimate" explanations here are there?

BMW is going to end up suffering for this approach. Loyalists are getting sickened, which support their "core" products... so they better start building a strong revenue stream from the sub-ultimate driving machines to make up for the drop that'll be coming. BMW is starting to convince me it's time to look hard at Audi and MB.

I had to check to make sure you weren't kidding, as an M-sport Active Tourer would be thee most oxymoronic & mix-messaged, queer thing on the road.

Putting anything "M" on this Active Tourer would ruin the M-Branding forever dude..

FWD Space Wagon?

The interior is nice, yes. The exterior tries to be a BMW.

But a FWD Space Wagon is not your DNA. Sorry, BMW.

And, please, why does the front look like a anteater's nose?

It is really sad when Hyundai, Subaru and Kia are introducing better new products and concepts than BMW. I am really glad I have a 135i, most likely the last driver focused BMW that does not require an unlimited bank account. I really wish I had kept my 2000 323Ci.

I can't stop looking at this thing... like a terrible accident where you can't turn away. I even checked the date a few times in hopes April 1st may have snuck up on me. Nope. I hope BMW reads the feedback here... not that it would change their mind if they're just focused on bottom line numbers... but just to know they're gutting their loyalist base. Once the brand produces more new cars I dislike than like, it'll be time shift gears towards Audi or MB. I can't say I've loved either before, but BMW is surely making it easier these days.

Dammit, what's with the minivan looking, atrocious front end, repulsive hood line, front wheel drive, box on wheels-of-a-BMW?

This must be a dream, somebody pinch me please...
If this darn iPad wasn't so good, I'd thrown it into the wall upon seeing this BMW Flex...

Wait so BMW making one FWD car, which is based off a mini (one of the best handling FWD cars on the market) makes liking Audi & MB easier? In certain markets you can get fwd A8!! Pretty much every car they make other than the R8 and Q7 can be had in FWD. MB also has more FWD models than BMW's one, and they make sprinter vans..

Hmm, I can't seem to find any information about the transmission of this car.
Which gearboxes does it use? I reckon a regular 6-speed manual is in order, but what about the automatic?

I read that the new mini comes with a 6-speed auto, rather than the 8-speed of recent BMWs, but I can't even confirm if it's a new transmission or just the regular old one from ZF.

Thinking that the 2er AC shares the platform and the engines with the new mini, I'd be inclined to think that the gearboxes are the same as well.

Can someone confirm this?

As a former original owner of a red 2002 (which finally died as a race car), I can tell you that while it was ahead of its time as a fun car to drive, it was also a very practical and efficient car as were my subsequent BMWs. We had it before they were known in the USA as performance cars and, trust me it did not look the part either. The last BMW we bought new is a 318i - now with 300000 miles on it.

It's had to stay alive because, frankly, for many years BMW quit making efficient, practical cars that were also fun to drive. The X1 didn't come soon enough so I had to buy another vehicle (we also needed to replace our truck and AWD travel vehicle). I'm happy to say that BMW USA has three vehicles that we would buy now because they are efficient and practical for our future traveling as a newly retired couple. They are the X1, the 320i x drive, and the 328d xdrive. Although I miss the diesel option in the X1 and the manual transmission. I also have to say that this AT is very interesting to someone with our interests - if it is offered with x drive. Our 318i has never been fast but still runs and gets 35 mpg highway. My husband, son and I all fight over who gets to drive it - and at least two of us can still beat the pants off most drivers on downhill curvy roads

It´s now weird. They started planning 2-series Coupe in 2008 (if remember correctly) Many things has changed in five years. So will 1-series stay rwd in future? I think this 2-series Active tourer shows future direction on model groups. Next generation 1-series might be fwd too. Then all groups are understandable order.
