Noise while turning

2018 M240i. I noticed this noise at an autocross when my son was driving the car. Odd ticking sound while turning left. It's difficult to reproduce and I don't see any evidence of rubbing or anything. Stock staggered setup for tires and wheels.

YouTube Link:

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Mine occasionally makes a "card in the wheel spokes" sound when turning right at slow speeds. I did research into the matter (found the answer of the 3 series forum, M Sport 3 series have the suspension/brake parts) and many remedied it by simply adding a little grease to the wheel hub face and brake hub face and re-torquing of the wheel lugs. I did that and the sound disappeared for about 8 months. It then came back a few weeks ago and then disappeared once things got wet and humid. It's weird. Sounds like you've got the same issue.

Thanks, that's interesting. I will re-torque the wheels and see if that has an impact.

I'd be more concerned about that blur enveloping your car.

I'd say it was speed blur but it was closer to grocery getter speed.

Autocross...license plates...warranty...you know. If there weren't orange cones and a number on the car, I'd just take this video to the dealer.

I've read somewhere before about people taking their car to the dealer for something similar. I want to say those cases were at slow speeds, and the dealer ended up putting in somekind of spacer.

Edit: I don't have any details about the spacer or where it goes.

I have the same thing. They already replaced the wheel hubs, and it came back within a couple weeks. It doesn't seem to affect performance at all. If you figure out what the problem is, keep us updated.

So my dealer fixed this. They installed a friction material between the hubs and wheels. Noise gone. It's apparently a service bulletin.

Glad they got it sorted, I have the same issue too, but when turning right especially. Hope the noise stays away for you!

There’s a service bulletin for the m240i (mine is ‘17) and did the clicking noise at low speeds that I could hear. Sometimes at higher speeds. They add a spacer between the rotor and hub assembly I believe it was. The clicking is caused by rubbing of the 2 assemblies. Oddly enough it didn’t happen when new, but started around 10k Miles I believe. I’m over 20k now and after that spacers the clicking went away. Covered under warranty obviously so they should give you a loaner to compensate during repairs. Gave me a hard top vert 430i for the 2 days it took for repairs (had to order the part).

What does AX have to do with warranty? What do you think will happen?

Why not just reproduce it in a non-AX setting, film it, then take it to the dealer?

I believe this is the part number 31108053073 for the "DISC FOR HIGHER COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION"

I have not been able to repro it outside of the autocross event. It think it is a combination of heat cycles, hard braking, etc.

I just realized I had this problem in my car. Is it something I should get fixed or is it harmless? And I'm guessing my warranty will cover it. I have done nothing to void it.

Find a roundabout and start speeding till you hear the noise

Harmless is my understanding. Warranty does cover it though so why not get it fixed is how I see it.

Oh, thank god I found this thread, I was getting crazy.

This is exactly what I hear: https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1734496

Does anyone have the service bulletin link? do you know which exactly part they install?

This should be the part (83192298825), even though it is not listed for the F22, the vehicles it is listed for have 5x120 wheel bolt patterns: https://www.getbmwparts.com/oem-part...IFJlc3VsdHM%3D

Best to check with a BMW parts person to be sure.

Try this TSB - Does the M240 have "lightweight brake discs"?

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...74009-9999.pdf

SITUATION
Ticking noise coming from front wheel while cornering without brakes applied, noticeable at low speeds.
The vehicle must be moving.
See attached video V34 01 20
Note: For a similar noise heard when parking with the brakes applied, refer to SIB 31 01 12.
CAUSE
Microscopic movement of the contact interface between the inner brake disc and the wheel bearing flange
on vehicles equipped with lightweight brake discs.

Yes, it does.

This was interesting:

"Note: If the vehicle is older than 24 months
from production date, replace the wheel bolts
on the front and rear axle."

The part they put on is called 34 10 6 887 529 - DISC FOR HIGHER COEFFICIENT - looks like a $50 piece per side, depending on where you get them. Do this under warranty - I would suggest taking any M or version with lightweight discs in for the fix - tell them it clicks when turning, and hand them a copy of the TBS.

I peruse the NHTSA website for TBSs for all my cars. Go to "nhtsa.gov" and go to the Recall tab. Then on the tab below go to "Vehicle" (not the VIN entry tab). I put in "2016 BMW" and select the 2 series. Then when the next page comes up go to "Manufacturer Communications" - scroll down to the list.

For the 2016 2 series there are 253 (1) TSB type communications. Many are irrelevant. Some show hidden "extended warranty" TSBs, like one for the bolts on the steering rack.

For the 2017 M240i there are 102 of the TSBs to read through!

https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2017/B...Communications

(My wife has a 2013 Prius - that car has over 440 TSBs!!!)

Thanks for this!

Your link takes us to the M2 list; this is the link for the 2017 M240i's 199 "manufacturer communications": https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2017/B...Communications.
