Possible to Upgrade Keyfob (2016 to 2018)?

Just our of shear curiosity, will a fob from a 2018 or current model work on a 2016? I have a 2016 228i and my only key is falling apart so I need a new one anyway and was wondering if the newer looking fob would work as a replacement.

My remote looks exactly like the one on the far left, but I'd like the one on the right if at all possible:

A small, stupid detail really, but I just like how newer fobs look over what I've got. Thoughts?

If Kies can program a display key from a 7 series to his F30, it must be possible

His display key got all kinds of screwed up, he tossed it.
