10K mile oil change intervals suddenly became 5K? No countdown either
The oil on this car was changed at 8K, 16K, 26K, and at 36K. At the 36K oil change, it said due in 1 year/11,000 miles. This afternoon I turned the car on and it was suddenly 20 miles overdue - at 41K.
It didn't count down either (never said due in 1,000 miles), and the last time I checked around 39K, it said I had 8K left. It's been at least 80% highway miles too. It didn't get triggered by the date either - that still is way off in mid-2020. I saw saw few other threads on weird intervals and they indicate usually that the car was reset to an originally short interval (doesn't seem like this case). I have to wonder why suddenly the interval dropped (looked like it was due at 47K, now at 41K), could it have been changed remotely? But other posts look like you have to go to a dealer to reprogram/reset systems and there aren't over the air updates. Either way, I'll be going to an independent shop, but the timing (after the 36K free interval ends) seems very suspicious Last edited by EstorilM240; 10-24-2019 at 11:50 PM.. |

I have a 19' 240i that I got in February of this year. I bought it new and had the dealer do a break in O/C at 5k. The reset the interval at that time by accident. At just over 10k they did the second O/C. After, I noticed that the indicator was reading 5k until the next service. Not 100% sure if they just forgot to reset it this time or if the interval has gone down as well. I'll find out next time I take it in if something has changed. Thought I would share bc it sounds similar to your post.

Thanks for the data point xantdieselx, good to know. At the 10K oil change, did you notice reminders at startup of maintenance needed (it shows more prominently at turn on when there's less than around 1500 miles to go). Also did you notice the mileage until oil change drastically change/get reduced? Or was it continuous?
I ask since it seemed like I was at 5,000+ miles to go, then suddenly I was overdue by 30 miles. No countdown |

After I got the 10k change done the indicator read 5k to next service. I thought it was a little odd b/c I had just over 10k on the odometer which would put the next service at 20k. As far as how quickly the interval drops, it drops fast but mostly due to my 80+ mile daily commute. M

Since you’ve got the B58 engine I recommend you change the oil+filter at 5k to 6k miles. The turbo is lubed by engine oil. Make sure the oil has the American Petroleum Institute (API) designation of “SN.” “S” means “spark” or gasoline powered (doh) and the “N” means it’s designed for engines with a turbo. I use LiquiMoly Tech 4200 + a Mann filter.

Finally hit almost 15k and had an OC, cabin filter & wipers done. They reset the interval and it is showing 11k to next service. I've done changes at 5, 10, & 15k so far and will continue with changing at 5k intervals.

My 19' M240 popped up for an oil change at 6k. The reminder was set for November. I'm at almost 5k but had bought the car in April. When I talked to my guy at bmw he told me to come in. As long as the notification is on you can get the warranty oil change. I was confused because all the other bmw's my wife has owned was 10k oil changes. Then I thought since I have a B58 maybe it's different. Then the guy at work has an X3 M40 and he said his was due at 10k but every time he's gone the oil change dropped 1k miles. So his next one was at 9k later then the one after that at 8k after the oil change. Makes no sense to me. lol
