Most car manufactures have gone to 0W-20 for better MPG.
My question is .... other than BMW oil, can we get BMW approved oil in that weight? All I've seen is Castrol 0W-40, on the shelves, that has the BMW LL01 certificate.

Sorry to be the bearer of ill news, but Mobil 1 oils run on the thin side. I have a 2001 330Ci and the recommended Mobil 1 oil is 0W40, and not the thinner oils. I recommend you use the dealer 5W30 oil. Btw, I have a 2018 M240i on order. It'll be my 5th BMW, so I have a bit of experience with these cars.

With all the differences of opinions and recommendations, I decided to let my German dealer decide which oil to use. They recommended 5w-30 and used Castrol Extended Performance specifically. They also said "no way" to 0W-20 when I mentioned the recommendations in the manual for the same reasons others have cited. I feel good about sticking with 5w-30 going forward.
I don't know if it was in my mind or what, but after the oil change I felt like the car was noticeably more responsive in the low end while in Comfort mode. I thought I had accidentally switched to Sport mode without realizing, but I hadn't. Again, could just be placebo effect. IDK. |

If you used the Eular service center by Globus, I wouldn't take their word for anything. When they replaced my turbo under warranty, they broke a clip and thought it'd be a good idea to zip tie the connector back on. Took them 6 months to order the right part (first 2 parts were wrong). They told me 5W-30 as well, but their lack or integrity, knowledge and professionalism when repairing my car makes me take anything they say as a joke. Plus I doubt the months and years that went into developing the b58 by very well educated engineers who recommend 0w-20 as the main oil to use isn't for nothing. I understand the arguement for the LL01 vs non certified oils, but different weights is another story. Yes, the manual says you can use 5w-30 depending on the operating environment (such as Canada, Northern Europe, Russia, etc), but here in Ktown where it gets to 15-20F I don't see why a thinner oil like 5w-30 would be necessary.

That's what I use in my N20 228i. I'm tuned and it's hotter than the Devil's butt crack here in SC.
