Is this unit only for cars with automatic transmissions?

Short answer is I don't know. It was purchased for an auto but may work for MT.

I think it's AT because that's what realoem shows (but I'm no expert in these matters): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=03_1127.

The final drive ratio appears to be the difference between the MT and AT units. My recollection is someone on this forum mentioned that while the ratios are interchangeable in a general sense, the car doesn't react well when it sees the rear wheels turning at a rate different than expected. Maybe that's something that can be fixed with coding.

It wasn't a difference in the AT or MT unit it was that the 33-10-8-659-989 is for the M240i and I needed the 33-10-8-659-987 for the M235i ZF8. The case is the same but the ratio is a bit taller on the M240i. I didn't notice the difference driving but when the ZF8 went into 8th gear at precisely 70mph, the ratio was not what the transmission expected and threw out a warning. Since the warning came from the AT, there would be no warning with a car with a MT.

I did a bit of research and it could have been coded out but it took an expert and I decided to bite the bullet and ultimately got and installed the right one for the M235i and all is good.

It's still sitting in my garage with 50 miles or so on it if someone wants one for an M240i on the east coast rather than the west coast. And it is heavy at around 80 pounds. I can also arrange installation if someone wanted it. It's actually easy and an under two hour job. Note I am not trying to hijack MerlinMc's post. But since I was the one who installed both, I wanted to clear up any misunderstandings.

But no matter what you are considering, the MPerf Diff makes a huge noticeable difference in drivability out of a corner or in the snow. The effort of getting and installing one is well worth it.

Rich, thank you for your research, experience and post. Very helpful.

The LSD is indeed one of the very best upgrades that can be made. It's simply a different car. In situations where the traction control would previously kick in (like wet, snow, hills, corners) and the car would "bog down," the rear tires now "bite" voraciously. The car "hooks up" and goes.

I ended up with an extra LSD as part of an accommodation for messing up my car order (see my post in the ordering forum). The dealer installed mine in one morning. The LSD I am selling is brand new and still in the original box.

I have a m240i xdrive/ZF8 and was wondering what kind of performance difference the LSD would make.

If you read Rich's post two above yours he shares his experience with installing this Diff with the ZF8. Basically it will throw a code because the gear ratio is different then what the automatic transmission computer is expecting. Which means you won't enjoy it.

No, you misunderstand. Rich has an M235i with a ZF8 (which has a 3.08 final drive). He accidentally bought the LSD for the 240/340/440/540, which has a slightly taller 2.81 final drive ratio. His TCU threw a chassis stabilization malfunction when it didn't see the correct RPM for the given MPH with the LSD installed. Has nothing to do with MT vs 8AT, and everything to do with final drive ratio.

That said, I cannot comment on the viability of the LSD with X-Drive.

BTW, I actually bought Rich's LSD this morning. He's a great guy and I got a great deal! Can't wait to get it installed!

I am not sure where I said you won't enjoy installing a LSD because, for the record, it's the best upgrade you can make. You notice the difference the moment you make your first corner and give it a bit of throttle.

But if you install the wrong diff like I did, (I installed the m240i diff rather than the M235i diff which has a bit taller ratio) it will throw a code from the TCM. That is a problem as the warning notice is pervasive and annoying.

Glad that you got home safe in the bad weather. Let me know how the install goes. And everyone for the record, this community is great. Don is a great guy too.

^^

Lol, I got pulled over by the NYS Troopers, about 15 minutes north of the Sloatsburg rest stop. Tahoe comes up next to me in the passing lane, as I'm doing barely 70; seat belt on, both hands on the wheel. We're mirror to mirror, then he drops back in behind me. (That is never good). Lights me up and comes around to the passenger side, asking for my license and registration. ( I am totally miffed?) Then he looks up at my stickers and says "I see I made a mistake. I thought your inspection sticker was grey. I was focused on the sticker above the inspection sticker" (Which is a red county sheriff sticker). "Have a nice day".

Cleared up though and turned out to be a nice day!

I don't know why you guys are misunderstanding me.

I didn't mean you wouldn't be happy with an LSD.

I'll just shut up, because I want to buy this diff but I'm saving my pennies right now

Let's just say I have been lit up more times than I care to remember. But never has the trooper apologized to me.

Although there was this time I was driving in Ukraine and a cop pulls us over for not doing anything. My colleague starts yelling at him in Russian from the passenger seat and I am thinking Gulag for me. The next thing I know the cop says in perfect English, "I am sorry. Have a nice time in our country." My friend said he was looking for money and he told him that was not going to happen. We were not in Kansas or anywhere close any more.

Glad to hear it worked out.

Ha, awesome story! Got the diff installed yesterday. $360+ tax by my local guy is better than the $650+ I was quoted by the Euro place. Car is totally transformed and it's going to take a few thousand miles to get used to it. Loving it so far. Someone buy Merlin's LSD; you will love it!

Great. Glad you like it and I'll see you some Saturday night at Utica Rome Speedway when my bud runs his modified.

And yes, the LSD is the best bang for the buck you can put into your ride. You won't be sorry.
