Anyone with a Grand Tourer

I'm just about to pull the trigger on a brand new 218d Grand Tourer

It's for the wife as we're about to have our first sprog so she needs to replace her VW EOS with something more practical.

I've gone for the Luxury package and the only extras I've done are as follows:
  • HiFi Audio
  • Panoramic Roof
  • Extended range tank
  • Auto-dim rearview mirror
  • Metallic paint option

I've also gone for the black and beige leather option (dark carpets and beige seats), and also the 5 spoke 17" wheels. The luxury ones look terrible!

I plan to install Bimmer-techs smartview airplay box so the wife can use her iPhone on the main display. Navigation seemed like a mega rip-off! €1,500 seems insane!

Does anyone have any experiences with them? Are they different from the Active Tourer with regards to driving experience?

Extended range tank - lucky bastards. That's #1 on my wish list for my 228. Do you know how big it is?

I think you get 15 litres extra. But in the grand scheme of things, that's easily another 250km minimum on an already 1,000km tank.

I just ordered a 220i Gran Tourer (wife's car).

It's a 6MT w/ luxury line. It has every option except for the glass roof.

I'm driving a 2011 328i touring (E91), so not really sure how it will compare. That said, after looking at everything in the segment, I think it's the best compromise.

My dealer told me that it may not be 'the ultimate driving machine', it has proven to be 'the ultimate customer retention vehicle'.

Here's my question: What's the best roof box for the Gran Tourer? I've ordered the roof rails.

Speaking of the roof rails...they are identical to those on my F31.

I went for Thule Aero bars FYI...

Good to know.

And for the box, do you suggest Thule versus BMW-branded (white-labeled Thule or Yakima?). I'm thinking of the Thule 460 Liter but am still researching a bit.

Thule all the way! BMW ones I found are bulky. I've got a Thule Dynamic roof box which is excellent! Can't recommend it enough and the rest of the Thule gear is rock solid.

Cool. Thanks. Looks like you can still cruise at 250 KMH with your box

Not sure I'd want to try that!

I've cruised at 150km/h with it on the roof; However Thule do not recommend speeds above 130km/h...

We own both an Active Tourer (mine) and a Gran Tourer (my wife's). The handling seems identical in both cars to me (218d models), despite the Gran Tourer being slightly larger. We are very pleased with both cars. The benefits of the Gran over the Active are roofbars as standard rather than an add on, more headroom for the rear passengers, and of course the "7" seats. We have a family of 7 (all adults now), and on occasions have managed to fit all of us in it, and a dog, but I would not like to travel any distance like that!

An alternative roofbox worth looking at is the German-made Kamei - we have that paired with Whispbars on our Gran Tourer, and there is no perceivable noise from the roofbox, even at speeds somewhat in excess of 70mph :-)

I ended ordering the factory box and cross-bars (420 liter).

Review to follow.

Hi Roundle!
Hope all is well, I noticed your post about ordering the Gran Tourer and was wondering if you had ordered the Driving Assistant PLUS package? I am very interested in this TECH and considering ordering it, but I can't find a car to demo it in nor can I find anyone to explain EXACTLY how it functions and it's limitations.

I have seen all the YouTube videos but they are all on the 5 and 7 series and I not sure it the functionality is the same as the 2 series.

Many thanks in advance
Deane

Hello drlmiles (or anybody else),
I would like to ask you for an advise, seeing you are a Gran Tourer experienced driver with a big family. I am considering buying this model. As there is very limited possibility to go and check it personally at this lock-down era, I am looking for a help here.
I will need to fit three child seats in the second row seats. Put next to each other, they need to sit on at least 1200 mm wide base and the width from door to door at the height - where the seats are widest - needs to be at least 1430 mm.
I have seen the dimensions on the paper and they should suffice but could you maybe check for me, or tell me from your experience, if it is correct? I'll appreciate a lot, if you do.
Thank you in advance very much.

Hi

I used to own a Gran Tourer and we had 3 child seats next to each other. I don’t remember the dimensions of the seats. It worked at just fine. It helps a lot that you can tilt the back of the Tourer’s seats independently. You can also move the seats back and forth. That way, I was able to make a setup that gave a bit more room for the child seats.

I hope this helps.

Hello, it does not fit 3 child seats in a row for me even with 1 newborn car seat. Not sure regarding dimensions but brands used are Joye, Cossatto, Cybex.
