N20 with Full Bolt ons...and Meth??
Hey guys, it's been a while since I've been on here, with working so much and being sick I've really gotten away from my fellow 2er community. So Friday I'll be receiving a special gift from the car gods... well... the FedEx guy. Seeing as I love the n20 and with the bolt ons as well as the jb4 the cars a monster. I thought I would try something a little different and as far as I'm concerned not common at all on our 4 banger. Methanol Injection.
As far as benefits, from what I was told from local tuners along with Google, this was a great asset with forced induction to drop air intake temperatures and have the equivalent of running race fuel all the time on pump gas. I got the BMS kit and I'll have installation pics as well as startup, revs, final appearance, accelerations, and all that good stuff once installed. Im excited to be somewhat of a lab rat for this, and I won't keep you guys waiting once it's in. Last edited by Csmoove195; 03-09-2016 at 09:35 AM.. |

Good luck but I'd be very cautious. The N20 is not the most durable engine out there! Keep us posted!

I know about a couple N20 piggyback tunes and a couple of flash tunes, but I've never gone with Meth. So I'll definitely be following this. All I can say is go slowly. This engine, for whatever reason has a tendency to start to knock (detonation) when turning up the boost, more so than it's bigger brother the N55. If you study up on the causes of knock it can be for a number of reasons, one being engine design. Assuming IAT's, fuel and boost are similar then I guess the N55 must be a little more robust. I know the N20 has a unique wrist pin offset and Crank offset, so perhaps that's the reason it comes on a little earlier. Or maybe it's just the boost figures combined with higher IAT's and timing. Anyway the higher octane and better quenching capability of Meth (esp with water mix) will help, but if (or more accurately when) you do get knock, you will want to be limiting power or it can be pretty catastrophic! So start out being careful with timing and fueling. don't get too cute with advancing the timing (just because the fuel has more knock resistance and cools the charge) and probably best off running a little rich. Seems the N20 already runs lean and hot (it makes it more efficient on 2 counts) and running any leaner is asking for problems. That's my 2 cents for now. I plan on installing my stage 2 turbo soon and will look to run higher boost (for longer) than most stage 1 tunes. I will probably have to change the MAP/TMAP sensors for ones with higher range (since the stock setup is limited to 22PSI boost). Also inorder to keep it safe I'm going to add over the top fueling (running rich) and will run more retarded timing. From there I can slowly advance timing and lean it out. Eventually my plan is to install drop in forged Pistons, Rods, Coated big end bearings and ARP rod bolts. I'd like to do the head studs too if possible and install a oil pan baffle to stop the oil starvation that can happen under heavy breaking and hard cornering. Thanks for sharing @csmoove195. Stay safe and let's see how far we can take the N20!! |

Thanks Stubok for your feedback and I appreciate all the info. And of course I wish you the best of luck with your stage 2 kit when you get it installed and I'll be sure to follow your build down the road and gain more knowledge about these engines.
I do not know 100% of what I'll be doing once this kit is installed, but everything you mentioned with fuel, timing, boost, and IAT's make sense to me. As far as running lean, I am curious on one thing. I put in f80 m3/m4 spark plugs on account of aging the life of the n20 specific plugs a little too fast. Would the spark plugs make a difference in how much fuel is added when comparing to the n20 plugs? Would that mean I'd be running more lean therefore I would be adding more fuel and advancing timing even more at the starting point for combating knock? And also, should there be a specific percentage of "safe" meth/water mix I should be adding? 50/50? Sorry for the all the questions in advance. |

I can't really answer your questions on how much Meth, or what ratio of meth/water you should run. I've read somewhere that 30:70 is a good place to start. Obviously the size of nozzle you run will be effected, and I know more water means you should run a smaller nozzle. It would be interesting to know what size nozzles BMS supplied with your kit.
As far as spark plugs are concerned. I also run the S55-M3 plugs. I actually discovered this. Mainly from reading about how highly boosted engines making big power respond to cooler plugs with smaller gaps. It just so happens the M plugs are a step colder with a slightly smaller gap. Which makes sense since the M motor is more powerful. It's all to do with the spark, flame front and effect on knock, and that's also effected by the head design etc, something I know little about but also makes sense. The stock N20 plugs are designed to run hot with a lean mixture for efficiency. That's great for fuel economy but not for making power. When you turn up the boost you also turn up the heat, so you need to adjust the equipment to cope with that. Anyway I tried it and it reduced the pinging. So I've stuck with it! |

Hey Stubok, The kit includes a cm10 nozzle, I'm assuming that's for more precise control of spray. I'm sure I'll be running a mixture of meth/water but it will probably be a trial and error for the correct and hopefully safe percentage. Is there a way to adjust the air/fuel mixture using the jb4? Or is there another method with a different piece of equipment?

The kit came in and I must say this all looks of very high quality, no imperfections, box was wrapped well, nothing less than I had expected coming from BMS. Special thanks to Mike@x-ph.com for the service and support

I may be off base here, but I thought CM10 was fairly large. I was expecting CM5 or CM7 for the 4 banger nozzle.
Not sure how much you can control the AFR with the JB4. Will be very interested in how this setup and the control it offers pans out. |

My charge pipe should be here at the latest Friday so if I end up going through with the install this weekend I'll be sure to give you as well as everyone else the information and overall reaction as best as I can.

Sorry about this delay, I've been through a little bit of a financial situation, but I have the install date scheduled for this coming Saturday. I would have had it done sooner but I had installed the charge pipe myself and it wasn't connected properly to the intercooler, so the gasket blew to pieces when I made boost. |

Nice. I have a couple places here that sell it. I also have an E85 Shell station near me.

There's only one place within an hour radius which was the one I went to that also has e85. Although it wasn't too bad for the money either, 5 gallons of 99.5 percent meth for about 40 bucks. I'm not sure how much others have paid but I can't complain.
