Oil Report

So I've attached my first oil report (Did not find a previous thread).

Background:
2015 228i, with 40K km no clue what oil was used by previous owner or how many miles were on it. Report came back very positive. I'll post the next one after my 8K Km.

Titanium and boron are high. Did you get any feedback on those numbers?

Do a search in the maintenance section of this forum for "Blackstone". I did mine and posted in there. I'm now about to hit 70K miles and will do another with this next oil change. I have been using 0w-40 castrol European formula since I've been out of warranty. I've been BMS Stage 1 tuned since 45K miles as well.

I followed up with Blackstone and this is what they said about the Boron and Titanium:

Those elements are just additive in whatever oil was used for this sample. They're both harmless. If I had to guess, I think the oil is Valvoline given the additives present. They just started using titanium and magnesium at these levels. I'm not sure what purpose titanium serves as an oil additive, but it sure is popular these days! It's harmless, so no worries there. Castrol uses some titanium in some of its products too, and Mobil and Kendall use it too. No worries there!

Here's a list of all the elements and where they come from: http://www.blackstone-labs.com/report-explanation.php

That being said I'm just going to continue getting updates as I change the oil. Looking through this forum not many people posted their reports so its hard to draw any conclusions specific to this engine.

Update

So I changed the oil again and I got the attached report. Not bad but I'm thinking of running M1 0-40 for my next one to see if I get any different results.
FYI ... I run 8000km between oil changes. The oil I tested in this last sample was BMW 5-30 oil. Which is the same oil I used again...I wanted 2 cycles on this oil to see how it performs.

Thanks for posting new results. I agree, the report came back good.

So, why do you want to try Mobil One?? Especially, in an oil that isn't recommended by BMW? See attached from Mobil One website...

I use the Castrol Syntec 0-40 Euro blend. It's BMW LL-01 approved. But I'm going to switch to RedLine 5w-30.

Response to Biz4two:

I know there are many oil debates and I do not want to turn this tread into one of those...

These are just my thoughts:

1. I use M1 on my other vehicles ...2 Porsches and 1 Mercedes
2. I've used M1 successfully on my 2006 Audi A4 2.0T until I sold it with 167,000mi
3. That being said I recognize the lack of the BMW LL-01 rating for M1
4. Part of me thinks this is just marketing and back door deals that I can prove by testing it in my engine for 2 cycles and reviewing the reports
5. I am considering the Castrol Syntec 0-40 Euro blend as a test as well

In any case I think the most important thing to do is ...just change the oil

I totally agree with your train of though on the oil you use, especially the last bit.

6SPMAN -- Ok...thanks for the reply.

I'll certainly be interested in your oil analysis from using M1. Especially if you decide to go 2 oil change intervals.

Good luck!!

Updated oil Report

This is the latest oil report for the BMW 5w-30 oil that I had been using. New oil is Castrol 0w-40 European formula. The car is sitting longer now due to a new company vehicle that has my BMW parked for longer periods.

6SPMAN -- That is a very healthy oil report using BMW oil!! Very nice to read that, because so many owners question BMW oil...and prefer to use something else.

Just a couple weeks ago, I changed my oil on my f22. I was surprised to find that the BMW 5w-30 oil has been discontinued by BMW. It is now recommended to go with BMW 0w-30.

Purchased my oil change "kit" from FCP Euro...

Hello Everyone,
Another update on my engine oil (228i),

This one is from the Castrol 0-40 formula, It hit the 1yr mark before the 8000km (approx. 5000mi) mark so the mileage is shorter than normal. As promised, this is the first of 2 Castrol oil reports so you will need to wait, most likely another year, before I get the 2nd Castrol report.

So in summary:

1st Report: Unknown oil & Run time- purchased vehicle
2nd Report: BMW 5-30
3rd Report: BMW 5-30
4th Report: Castrol 0-40

For fun at 60,000km I also did the Tranny and Diff fluid but did not get any analysis...I have my limits to this fun. Just for those that want to know I used BMW fluids for both Diff and Tranny.

Just changed my oil before a long trip to SoCal from NorCal. Went with BMW 0-30W for a little more protection in this warm weather. Granted my car only has 17K on it. Gas mileage improved by 1.5 mpg on the highway over dealer changed 0-20W, both measurements on all freeway driving (huh?) Thicker oil and better gas mileage. I love it.

How do you get an analysis like this? Can it be requested through the dealer when maintenance is performed? Is it an extra charge? Thanks!
