255/35-18 rear and 255/40-17 front: https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1532418

Today, with the same suspension and settings, I run 255/35-18 front and rear on the street during the summer. The tires are Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.

These are the alignment and wheel specs before I added a BMW M Performance Brake Kit to the car:
  • Same alignment as in the link in the above post.
  • Front: 18X9 ET42 Apex ARC-8 w/no spacers
  • Rear: 18X9 ET58 Apex ARC-8 w/5mm spacers

Could the car be tracked with that wheel/tire setup without any rubbing?

the safest 18" rim square fitment with no spacers would be 225/40-18. Apex appears to have a direct fit 245/40-17 square fitment with an ET40 offset. Brake clearances will be tight but it should clear as long as you don't have the m performance brakes retrofitted. The standard gray calipers and the blue calipers will clear. For those going this route, I'd recommend knocking off the vibration dampers from the ends of your brake pads just to increase the gap between the pads and the barrel of the wheel. Some brake pads may come without these vibration dampers, so in that case you don't have to do anything. I haven't noticed any adverse effects from running with or without the dampers.

My car became trackable with 255 tires after these modifications were made (as indicated in the link posted above):
  • camber plates
  • significant negative camber (-2.6 front & -2.2 rear)
  • Koni struts and shocks (the brand can make a difference as far as inside tire clearance goes)
  • front fender roll
Note too that my car's ride height has been dropped -1" front and -1" rear, and the tires still fit and don't rub, even on the front fender liners.

Also note that different tires of the same nominal specification (e.g., 255-35/18) can have section and tread widths different enough to possibly make fitment difficult.

---------------------------------------------

If you haven't a fair amount of personal experience with fitting maximum-width tires on a car that you're going to take to the track, I'd suggest finding a qualified shop or person to assist you. I've always used top shops in the regions I've lived in, and, not being mechanically inclined, I've saved I don't know how much money over the years by following the advice of qualified people with decades of experience.

In the case of my M240i, I took it to TC Kline Racing in Hilliard, Ohio. He and his shop have been building aftermarket BMW suspensions for over 30 years. The suspensions are installed on cars they buy and then test at Mid-Ohio, a handling track with a couple of high-speed sections. TC Kline Racing was a one-stop shop for me after I bought my car with the intention of tracking it.

Just my 2.
