Valve Cover Replacement
At just under 85K -- Oil leaking from VC -- went ahead and replaced with OEM Mahle VC.
I believe that the photos show that the old cover was full of hardened & crusty oil carbon type stuff. Although the old cover was not warped or cracked that I could tell - the small passage ways for the PCV oil separator would be difficult to properly clean ~ glad I change the Cover and not just the gasket. On my old N54 engine I had just changed out the gasket. The gasket on this R&R was brittle and would snap crack at the lower locations of the cover close to the exhaust manifold (heat cycle issue for sure). Note: OCI have been at 5K miles with PP Euro 5W-40 Rear most (3) Cover bolts were difficult to access but using my 1/4 flex extension it was doable and was even able to torque all 3. I did oil prime by leaving the injectors unplugged but it is not necessary. Followed up with clearing codes with my Autel OBD Scanner. |

Great feat!
BMW recently quoted me for the Valve cover gasket replacement as well as the oil filter housing gasket replacement (both are leaking oil). Total was 1200 Euro, including roughly 970 Euro for labor cost (they factored in 4.5 hours) and the rest on parts. The part list they quoted included:
Interestingly, they also included a high pressure fuel rail replacement. 123Britt Did you have to replace that too? Other than the YouTube video, what resources did you use as step by step instructions? I’m mostly after the original specs for torque values when tightening bolts and screws. Are these instructions usually available on ISTA or equivalent Software? |
