Things to do/good drives around Spartanburg?
I'm headed down to the BMW Performance center in Mid April (from Upstate NY) and wondering if anybody has ideas for must-see/must drive routes in that area. I'm already planning to add a day to do Tail of the Dragon; is it also worthwhile to add the Cherohala Trail? Thinking I may head North on one o the smaller routes like 119 or 120 (perhaps 77/79 if I stay w/ 4 lanes). Any other suggestions welcomed.

Blue Ridge Parkway is always a great drive too.

Here's a couple views from a drive between Blowing Rock and Asheville, NC back in '16:

Three Pedal Steve was kind enough to share the following tips before a trip I was taking to those areas a few years ago:
"Running north of the Spartanburg and Greenville you will find hwy 11 where you want to head in a west direction. This is the foothills parkway and it is flat and straight and goes through beautiful foothills and lakes. There are three options; all good because they climb steeply up to the Highlands plateau. First is 276 to Brevard where you take 64 west. Or stay on hwy 11 a bit longer and take hwy 176 to Rosman where you catch hwy 64 west. Or take SC130 at Salem and proceed to Sapphire NC where 64 intersects. Proceed on 64 west to Highlands where 64 joins hwy 28. Continue west on 64/28 toward Franklin and you experience the Waterfall Hwy. In Franklin 64 separates and you continue on Hwy28 through Franklin and all the way to Tail of the Dragon. This part of the road covers the old bootleggers highway with a wide variety of roads. Once you are at Deal Gap and TotD, you also want to divert to ride on the Cherohala Skyway and also Joyce Kilmer Natl Forest- with the largest trees in eastern America." |
