New to me M240i - Is this tickning noise normal?
I recently got a M240i (2017 model year). I was wondering of this tickning noise is normal. The first video is when starting the car, and second video is after driving for a while.
Is the sound specifically in the first video normal? In the second video, I think it sounds like the direct injection sounds. First videos sound a bit like rattling or ticking. What do you guys think. Should I let a mechanic listen? https://www.youtube.com/shorts/g9gdNLDgEgk https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VpreKqfGaxo |

Yeah the HPFP and injectors are very loud on this car, same with most DI engines.

Here is a final video of a true cold start. The rattling/tickning noise is more pronounced in this video. Does this sound normal? Also at the end of the video there is a slight electric noise. Don't know what that is. |

If you take off the cover and some of the trim pieces, you'll notice that theres a lot of pieces in place to muffle the sound, its still pretty loud, since I've done my HPFP upgrade its louder, but completely normal. The electric sound I'm not too sure on someone else may know what that is coming from.

Hi, I'm new to the forum.
Sorry to resurrect this thread but I have a similar sound. I feel mine is much louder though and I'm struggling to ignore it. Is this the injectors too or should I be booking it in at BMW? The cars new to me, I've had an M140i in the past and I don't remember that being this loud. That M140i had 15k on it. https://youtube.com/shorts/95Eo5oypviY?feature=share I took the cover off to get in close but it doesn't half sound loud. The engine is smooth as silk and seems fine...just that noise urgh! This car has covered 30k |

OP's ticking noise is totally normal but what you've got seems a bit OTT! I'd take it to a BMW specialist before the dealer themselves though unless you still have warranty on it, main dealers are way too expensive to do diagnostic work in my opinion!

Think I will take it in but I can't decide if I just got a bit close with camera and taking all the cover off etc etc, kinda sounds like all the other videos I've heard when people are suggesting it's all good and just injector noise when I don't get stuck in there...
https://youtube.com/shorts/_w4m8waZv2s?feature=share Like this is how it sounds with just the bonnet up and covers on, kinda sounds not bad eh prolly best to get it booked in just to be sure...goodbye money |

First vid sounds a little odd, with the sound accompanying the ticking.. second vid with the cover sounds fine.
Signed a stranger on the internet. It's difficult to diagnose things from sounds alone, hope you get some peace with what the dealer comes up with. |

Thanks freaky, nah I appreciate it's hard to tell just from a video on the internet. I think I've just demonstrated that with the two videos I've made. One sounds dodgy and the other sounds ok but it's that same noise.
Appreciate the reply, I will get it checked...Be daft not to while it's under warranty. |
