Newbie LSD question resale
I have found a used M235 and it has and LSD ( per the BMW build sheet I have seen) I know what price it was new but can't seem to figure out what value it should adds to a used BMW. Any thoughts?

Typically those types of "additions" don't translate to many extra $$ on resale. Often times, all things being equal, a "loaded" version compared to a similar vehicle with fewer options generally isn't worth much more at the time of resale. It also comes down to what you want and what you're willing to pay for. In the case of the LSD, if it's an option someone is looking for on their M235, they would be willing to pay a bit more for it, but if it's an option someone doesn't really care about they probably wouldn't be want to pay anything extra for it.

Is this an owner created build sheet or receipts from a dealer?
If it's the factory spec sheet, I wasn't aware F22's could be optioned with the M Performance LSD. MY understanding is that they are dealer-order only and install post purchase. I would check the S/N or P/N on the unit before hand if there's no receipts of the purchase from a reputable parts dealer - the housing is identical. For the premium, maybe $1,000? Personally, I'd buy a good example of a completely stock F22 with the packages you want, preferably CPO. Use the savings to have a Quaife (Helical) or MFactory (helical or clutch pack) unit installed. Keep in mind that the M Performance LSD is very mild with only 25% lock. For nearly the same price, MFactory will sell you the Ring Gear and Clutch Type pumpkin with the %lock of your choice. |

I'd think about this from a different perspective: Whoever owned this beforehand spent $2-3k on a rather specialized performance part, so I'd assume that car was run pretty hard (I'd assume it was at least running a tune as well). To me, this is something I'd want to pay less for, not more - not a dealbreaker like a car that obviously was badly neglected or wrecked, but I'd assume that many of those miles on the odo were high-wear miles. I'd certainly be factoring in the cost of extended warranty, or quite cautious if that is not an option.

LSD doesn't necessarily equal tune. A lot of people got the port installed LSD when buying their car because it was offered for a reasonable cost. I think it's worth about $1,000 more than a similarly optioned car without it.

Thanks all for the feedback, lots to think about. It is a CPO car with 35 months left on it, so I feel good about that. The Dealer selling it leased the car originally and has a provided a printout from bmwgroup.com so I assume it was port or dealer installed as its on the paperwork in two spots.
I need to figure out what the car is worth to me and work into it, their starting price is pretty high (as expected) and I just need to keep patience and remember why I have been looking for a while and want the right car I don't just need a car ( tho it seems most everyone loves their M2XX). |

You could order the LSD from factory but it's not installed at the factory, it gets port-installed after the car is unloaded from the boat after it goes through customs... The difference is in that case, BMW keeps your original differential.... if you order it afterwards, then you can keep your differential but then you need to pay for the install.... |

The MP LSD is very high quality and is built for BMW by one the best and most respected LSD builders in the world. The MP LSD has 30% lock up on acceleration and 10% lock up on decceleration. It's very capable and ideal for a street car that may see non-competitive track use. I can promise you, you can feel it working quite a bit. For 2 years, my M235 didn't have it. I added it about 5 months ago and the difference in traction in all situations is astounding. You can buy other aftermarket LSDs as well, but it will cost you closer to $3,500-4,000 installed.

As above, I just retro-fitted the BMW M Performance LSD to my M235i convertible 2 years after buying it. I'd say it really should have been either standard or a true factory option for, say $800-$1000 - it really makes the car complete and I'm fairly sure BMW only dropped it in order to differentiate from the M2 and save a bit of money. The M-Lite is a 330 BHP RWD performance car that is also a very capable daily drive as well, especially with the Adaptive Suspension. I don't have any performance mods and don't track the car. But I do use the power and handling when it's safe and suitable to do so.
If you're using the car the way it's designed to be driven then you'll appreciate the LSD. As a retro-fit the cost is quite high but if you're getting it for $800-$1k then it's a bargain. But you might feel that the cost-benefit case is borderline if you only ever drive the car on busy commuter freeways and urban streets. It'll really shine however, if you ever get into canyon country or open rural roads. That said, I've still noticed the benefit in more routine driving conditions. Most people have a budget that's not infinite, so have to compromise a bit on options. What I'd say is that at a pre-owned discount, the LSD sits there as a desirable option alongside Adaptive Suspension, Sports Auto, electric seats + lumbar, and Xenon Adaptive headlights.

Should add $1000-1500 on resale, or, about 50% of what it would cost, retail. This goes for any "added" component both aftermarket and OEM. For $1k, it would be a no brainer, imo..
If I were looking for the right car (6MT, LSD, no sunroof etc) I'd pay slightly more to have that part installed, already. What I wouldn't want is a hack job of a JB4 install, gadgetry/gauges, modded exterior, things of that nature..

All 235 / 240 cars have the Adaptive Suspension as standard and the 228 / 230 cars have it as part of the Track Handling Pkg, at least in the US anyway.

I took my S2000 to redline every single day many times per day in every gear, that doesn't hurt the car even a bit. Sold it with close to 100k miles with zero issues and mint condition. |

But then again the S2000 is a Honda - and it's well known they're damn near bulletproof.

So I went back and forth with the dealer and we agreed on numbers then they call this morning to say the car didn't pass CPO as it has Dinan springs. I passed on it but I am sure it was the full Dinan kit, the salesman hinted it probably did but but only could confirm it failed on the springs. I don't have a desire to get an abused toy.
I am not trying to feed the fire on cars with LSD are modified I had an LSD in my stock miata because I liked the feel better that car didn't have enough power for 0-60 improvements but it helped in the corners a lot. its making me reconsider ordering a new one over CPO |

Ordering new is awesome and a great way to get exactly what you want, but if CPO is still something you're thinking about, don't give up on it because of this experience. Really, CPO isn't a bad way to go if you can find the right car. I love my M235i and BMW, but my only sore spot with BMW is what I perceive to be quite high depreciation, particularly in the first few years. I think this has a lot to do with the high lease rate for new BMW's which tends to flood the market with 2-3 year old cars, typically at BMW dealerships because there are financial incentives to lease a second or third BMW. Fortunately, due to a number of factors, I was able to purchase my car at a much better than average discount so the initial hit of BMW depreciation for me was somewhat muted. That said, discounts on newly ordered BMWs aren't generally very impressive which makes CPO very attractive. Best of luck with your search.

Yeah thanks P912guy. I really struggle with the depreciation if it wasn't so high new would be a no brainer for me. If I can can get a good (which I know most are lots of) 2 year old CPO it just financially such a deal. I just need patience or bite the bullet and get a new 2018.

Your right most I like are west coast. I am in Charlotte and I desire an oyster maybe terra interior which does not help the search. I tried to have one in San Francisco transferred to a sister dealer close to me but it seems that company has interesting inter dealer policies.
