Yeah, that was pretty rough...not an item I'd be keen to modify like that. That said, it'll probably be totally fine.

His YouTube channel is amazing, his sense of humor is dry and not the pretentious "Influencer" type. The attention to detail is to be respected and the parts cleaning is better than OEM. The ZHP Touring got my attention and the rebuilt E92 M3 looks like a blast to drive.

Agreed - that move wasn't up to his usual quality standards. I'm surprised he went that route.

The shorty headers looked like a set I had on my 86 325i when I was living in EU. Can't wait to see it run.

To be honest, I am not even sure if this is going to work without any problems. Don’t want to go into to much detail, but the way any water pump works is to somehow create a pressure difference which makes the fluid move. In case of a centrifugal pump, this is achieved by „throwing“ the water outwards in radial direction. The following 2min video explains it quite well:

As you can see, there are indeed impellers which have an open design. But in that case, the pump casing is manufactured accordingly, so that the gap between the edge of the impeller blades and the pump casing itself is very small (almost zero).
If you have a closed impeller (like Sreten did) and grind away the endplate, there is no reason for the water to move all the way towards the outer end of the blades. It would just leak out of the side (where normally the endplate would be). The pressure difference and flow-rate would be much smaller.

In addition to that, I think water pumps come pretty well balanced from the factory. Grinding off material unevenly could introduce vibration and wear out the bearings much faster.

But yeah, that’s just what I thought when I watched the video. And what do I know, right?
Maybe also works like this. But since Sreten is increasing the power output of the engine, I think it’s important to also have a working cooling system.

Yeah, I agree with what you said. But I don't think they're as sensitive as you might assume. Well, I'm hoping they're not very sensitive

I think he'll replace it pretty soon. It sticks out like a sore thumb as a bodge, against the backdrop of perfection he's going for. You can't see it from the outside, but he knows it's there...

Thanks, fellas!

Yeah, I absolutely hate the situation with the water pump and I'll address it in the next episode.

That said, I spoke to another builder and E31 restorer here in Germany (Wokke) who's been doing these M73/M70 hybrid builds since 2014 and he always grinds the water pump impeller and never experienced any issues. So it will work.

But still, it really bugs me and I don't want to leave it like that. I ordered a pair of new pumps and I'm gonna send them to a CNC machine shop and see if it's possible to transfer over the M73 impeller on the M70 pump.
If not, then see if the coolant pipe connection can be modified. M73 has a quick disconnect hose connection while M70 has standard clamps, but the angle is different too. Either way, hopefully I'll find a more elegant solution.

Great to see you found Wokke he is (in my opinion) the best authority on anything E31 related in the EU. I have gone to him many times back when I had my E31 6spd (exact same color combo as yours), and have never failed to be blown away by his knowledge of the platform. I also had his DME tuning chips and they totally transformed the car. Are you going to use him for the DME tuning for the M70/3?

Yes, Wokke is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to E31 and his DME chips for stock E31s are great. Since I'm running a different setup compared to what he normally does, someone else will do the tune for me.

I really wish he hadn't "fixed" the rake. He may have evened out the wheel gap, but now it doesn't sit level to the ground. Anyhow, this is the way most folk prefer it...

That UCP though...do they make them for the cars? Super envious.

Looks like someone made those rear brake lines from 303 stainless. It's still classed as stainless steel, but will turn orange in saline environments. It machines a lot more freely than most other stainless grades, which I guess is why it's been used. I share his frustration with new bolts going rusty immediately. Wish there was a permanent solution.

Time for something a little different.

Sreten mentioned to us patreon's a few months ago that he had bought a non-BMW (a Maserati).

So here is part 1 of Project Mantua - a Maserati Quattroporte GTS.

I would rather stab my own manhood with a rusty fork while Celine Dion's greatest hits played in the background. BUT....I will definitely be watching. You're one brave soul Sreten.

I went in with a pre-bias but I enjoyed it. They do sound awesome but they have the typical FIAT issues Fix It Again Tony.
