Whistling at 30mph in cold weather (228i)
Hi,
I have a whistling noise in the car every time its at 30mph. then till 33~34mph it pitches up and then disappears. Only happens in cold weather so below 18C. Dealership service has no clue what it is. I still can't figure out where it's coming from. Blowoff valve changed, still the same, so not that. Doesn't matter if on or off throttle as long as the speed is at 30. Fairly loud usually. Sound like the wind noise when something's not sealed properly but can't figure out what it might be. Windows up/down, AC on/off doesn't change anything. Any ideas? Edit: Got to record sound as well. Seems like it's coming from the front but can't be sure:https://vocaroo.com/i/s0IQA5z9QT5y Last edited by sandrik93; 10-18-2017 at 11:39 AM.. |

I just had a whistle sound this morning. It's was just as you described. It happened to be 22 degrees out as well. I popped the sunroof open and it stopped. I'm thinking that the seal gets deformed somehow when it gets that cold.

I thought mine was the sunroof at first but now sound comes with open, closed or vent positions. Since it's now cold every morning and I don't take highways to get to work, I have a pleasure of listening to that almost all the time.

Do you have a sunroof? I had that whistling sound over 80 km/hr. Turns out I had some pine needles in the seal for the sun roof. I vacuumed around the seal and took it to a touch less carwash. Haven't had the whistle again...knock on wood

You could check the windows one at a time at high enough speed 100 km/h. Alternately shoot compressed air at the weather stripping and have someone sit inside to hear whistling.
I would measure the door window to B-Pillar gap. Since the car is a coupe and slamming the doors close over a longer period of time will shift the windows from their factory positions and might throw the window regulator off. |

When it's real cold out your window won't roll down the inch or so that it does when you open the door. When you close the door it doesn't seal properly and makes a racket.
Once the window thaws, roll it down an inch and up again. |

23 days at the dealership at they still couldn't do anything. DIY if you wanna do it well. @Luv2 I do have a sunroof. Cleaned it but nothing changed.
Windows are fine. I had windows open one at a time. Doors as well. As well as the sunroof. One of the rubber seals somewhere else must be messing up so I decided to put the masking tape all over and take it off one at a time to see which part does it. Hope it works. I'm out of other ideas.. |

Make sure your car has this part on both sides. Probably not it but worth looking into.
