How easy is it to work on a B58 ?
Hi. Looking to buy and F22 or F23 with a B58 in it. I have worked on Audis before and am looking for some sense of how difficult it is to do things like: belt change and valve gasket cover changes.
I had some cars where you had to remove the front bumper or drop the engine to do a belt change. I'm hoping that's not the case with an F22/F23 M240XI. Thanks. |

BMWs, as with all other cars, have become increasingly "diffcult" to work on. By "difficult" I mean that:
- you have to remove more "stuff" to perform the maintenace task - you may need a special tool or tools to perform the task - the access to parts of the engine is restricted So, I find working on a RWD car much easier than a FWD/AWD car as the engine has a fore/aft orientation. |

Check what the DIY vids recommend.. but I would probably replace it if you're in there anyways. |

I just installed my AA catted downpipe in my driveway. It was a pretty easy job with a floor jack and jack stands. Overall took me about 2 hours and here's what I can tell you from the experience. 1. buy a spare V-band clamp. I had to cut the bolt on mine to get it off. 2. Buy a new gasket! My AA came with a new one, but why risk a leak and having to redo the job? The gasket and V-band are both cheap insurance in my opinion.

I've done a full turboback exhaust system as well as a charge pipe and intake, and have found it to be relatively simple to work on. Re: maintenance, the only things I've done so far are swapping brake fluid (and throwing in stainless lines) and one oil change - both were pretty easy. The hardest part on the oil change was getting the oil filter housing cap back on but so far, I'd call it pretty "easy".
Can't speak on belts or valve gaskets though.

B58 fuel pump, turbo, air to water charge cooler, etc are right on top of the engine. Compared to n55 and n54 way, way easier. You could do a full big turbo stock block b58 build in a day on stands with a floor jack. Turbo + pump + intake + downpipe + plugs and you're making big power. That's it.
Valve cover is the same. On top. If you're one to get hung up on plastic clips and stuff then yes it'll take more time an an exposed engine. But thats negligible. Vanos or timing chain work? Pull the engine since it's in the back. That still lives up to the BMW reputation.

I'd say its a relative easy engine to work on. I also thought N55 was ok too. Depending on engine bay size might change your experience tho (my B58 is in my M40i, bit larger)

I just did the downpipe recently on my F22 b58
Took me about an hour to unbolt everything, take out the sensors Took me another hour to wiggle the downpipe out First time doing a job like that, and it was pretty fun

Oil Change DIY
I did an Oil Change with LiquiMoly MolyGen (5W-40) for the summer months.
Took me about 1 hr to do. Fairly simple and there are no catches |
