I can't find an oil recommendation written anywhere for my 230i except "BMW oil". Why the secret? So they can sell their own branded oil? Even the Castrol site has no recommendation. The handbook recommends using a BMW like specification in a pinch but doesn't explain the spec! Castrol Edge 0W-20 was used by some on the forum .... is that recommended?

Personally, I went with a slightly thicker oil because the car sees track time and I tend to rev the N20 out between 5-6k rpm pretty regularly. My shop uses LiquiMoly on all modern BMW’s and I use 5w-30 in my 228i — have for 4 years now without any issues.

I've used the 0w20 in the winter since it doesn't take as long to warm up. Also used 5w30 and 0w40 in the summer. I get Castrol edge since they have that at autozone most of the time. Heard lots of good things about LiquiMoly though.

Simplest to just use BMW brand if all you need is to top off, or still under warranty (but I think theirs is all 30-weight). In Cali you won't notice diff between 0 vs 5 weight, but once off warranty use the highest top-visc you can (40 if recommended). Our engines really do need the extra stuff found in premium turbo oil (low volatility, low ash/deposits), not just the lubrication, so make sure whatever you use has good certs. There are other threads with specific info about which major aftermarket brands are OK - IIRC Castrol, Mobil1, Penzoil are all good, but run a search to be sure (I think Castrol is now the factory supplier?). And I avoid 'big box' store bargains b/c I'm afraid that they get suppliers to cheap out on things - just my own paranoia, but they certainly do it with electronics and clothes.

I wonder if they just stopped putting this in the owners manuals - my M2 doesn't list a/t this specific, but I think there is a sticker either on hood or core support. My '16 228 manual lists this: (for N20, so not specifically for B46)

I ONLY ever use OEM/DEALER oil and filter and what they reccomend, period, 5/6 years of ownership has proved that

I concur. The dealer oil, made by Shell, is pretty darn good oil, even the 0W20.

OP, I'd go with the BMW 0w30 from FCPEuro.
