Over-rev 8AT?

Hey guys, not sure if anyone else has experienced this, but I was driving today, in sport+, and I normally am in pure manual mode when i do this, but I guess I had forgotten to bump over the shifter, so it was still in like half-ass manual mode. So i went off a light and short shifted at like 3-4k rpm into second gear, and decided to mash the power a bit, and the car automatically dumped me back into first gear and according to the tac at least, i hit not the rev limiter but like a full 7500 rpm, needle all the way maxed, did my car just nuke itself? I've never seen the car do that, nor did I think it was possible to over-rev an automatic.

first I wonder of a torque converter acts as a power sponge and minimizes downshifts over revving.

if the car on it's own downshifted I highly doubt it did any damage. and a 500 rpm blip over maximum production suggested redline seems well within durability parameters

I hope you're right? I'm going nuts over here trying to download ISTA-D and trying to see if there are any codes anywhere. Car still drove fine but I only drove it for a few minutes after. The car did it on its own, but I'm out of warranty now, so even if it's the car's fault and something goes wrong, I'm screwed.

You sure the actual rev went that high. As the rev counter probably tried to keep up with the jump the inertia could have had the rev indicator still going up while in reality the rev were lover

That is what rev limiters do they cut engine power before you over rev it. If you never felt the engine stutter you are OK. It is possible with a manual to by pass the rev limiter when down shifting to 1st from red line in 3rd though.

Sounds like when you floor it and hit the down shift paddle. I've noticed this car is poorly programmed for that skip downshift. It goes to the lowest possible gear, but if you are on the gas, why the hell would you want to downshift into a gear that is at or slightly below redline?

Maybe because you were still in auto mode and only temporarily put it in manual with your upshift to 2nd, it got confused and make that same mistake I've noticed.

I've done this too. I was in manual sport+, and came to a stop at a red light. Light turned green and I went for it, forgetting the manual stuff.
It cut off at 7,500 RPM.

Look at it this way: the car knows exactly which RPM level you'll end up if you change gears (unlike with a manual).

It won't allow you to do anything stupid. It's even written in the manual.
