It's basically what I do as well. Proven to work for many of us. Good news is, it's only a seat cover, can do it all over again for a few hundo'$.

It's also an issue for folks shorter than you. I'm only 5'-7" with short legs, so my seat is a lot closer to the pedals than most. That means there's not much room between the wheel and the bolster when getting in the car. But I am extremely OCD like others, and make sure to protect the bolster from buttons or whatever when entering, and the seats are still pristine after 10,000 miles.

When my seat is adjusted properly for sport driving, it's pretty close to the steering wheel. So I turn and face at about 10 o'clock from the car seat and grab the seat back bolster with my left hand so that I don't drag my body over it, then I shoe horn my body into position. Jeans will scrub the bolster raw if you drag your butt over it every time you get in the car.

My X3 is 6 years old and the bolsters look new. No ass rub and regular cleaning and conditioning.

Garage List
Mine was worn in less than a year, I think from rivets on jeans and a tight garage; at home I can only open it to the first detent. I've started using seat position 2 for exit and entry, and that seems to have stalled out further wear. Still, pretty wimpy material compared to prior cars.
I spent 2 months of this year on crutches; getting out of the car on a bum knee while sparing the bolster took some serious contortion and gave me an elbow tendonitis.

IMO, wear is a result of how people enter and exit their cars. Size of person also has an impact also. I'm 6'2" 185 lbs.

Some guys tend to quickly slide sideways into their cars. Basically throwing themselves in the drivers seat. Rubbing the bolster each time they do so. Yeah I was young once and did it too.

Now as I've grown older and a bit "infirm', out of necessity due to back issues I now open the door, and back into the car and sit down. My legs barely touch the lower seat bolster and I do not at all contact the back bolster.

I use my left hand on the lower seat bolster to boost me up a bit as I swing my legs into the foot-well and turn to face the steering wheel. It works for me.

Certainly, to eliminate premature wear requires some behavior modification. Those willing to adjust won't have a wear issue, those that don't will.

Absolutely, it's all about technique.

I have a high mileage bod as well, so I use the same technique. An added attribute to our "old age" maneuver is that I can knock my shoes together before swinging them inside, thus eliminating most, if not all, debris.

ColourLock

I just used this product called ColourLock on my bolster. The Terra Dakota leather dye had worn and I thought the issue was related to dye transfer from pants, etc. I highly recommend this and can't believe how easy it was. It took 5 coats but it turned out great. I used a hair dryer to dry between coats. I haven't applied the leather protector yet (supposed to wait 24 hours). Any light variation is actual light as I took it outside. The color is consistent. These dyes are factory matched and you can order direct from ColourLock.

Many thanks, SteveAustin. I ordered the ColourLock kit to repair scuffs and scratches on my oyster Dakota leather seat bolsters. Followed directions from YT video and couldn't be more pleased with the results. I love it when a product exceeds expectations.

Any before/after pics? I have the same interior and it's showing wear. Also, what kit did you use for oyster? Was it the regular beige kit?

Sorry, no before pix. I will try to post a photo but bear with me as I will be learning the upload process as I go. FWIW, my wife says she can't tell where I made the repairs.

The manufacturer is in Germany and my understanding is that they stock matching colors for all late model BMW leather so I was able to order "BMW Oyster". BTW, I purchased through Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Colourlock-Le...1950725&sr=1-9

Thanks for the link. It doesn't have an option for the BMW oyster you speak of though

Nice work!

I’ve got some wear on my 2017 Coral Red and will definitely be ordering this from Colorlock.

I have a detailing business and this issue is very common. I just detailed a Bentley, Porsche Panamera and a Ferrari. Their leather is Connelly which is the best. But all of these vehicles had worn driver seat bolsters. Fact of life, all you can do is treat them with a good leather conditioner, keep back pockets empty and your ass off the bolster when sliding in and out. The Ferrari was the biggest challenge. Too freakin low for me.
