CF mirror caps... finally rid of that silver crap
eBay purchase. Not happy with how much thicker they are but oh well. They look good. Finally my black on black on black m240i xdrive has black mirrors too. Pulled the mirror using my ice scraper as a pry. Seemed perfect for the job. Now I can get my regular mirrors painted at the body shop in the same black just in case these have issues later.
Why the silver mirror caps, BMW. I hate them. |

I purchased these a few months ago and they look great and fit perfectly in case you don't want to deal with painting your old mirrors.

This was one of my first mods on my M235i. Hated the grey caps on my blue M235i.

I bought the 3M glossy black vinyl automotive wrap off Amazon and the guy who did my tinting wrapped my mirrors for free because it was such a simple application. I also bought the 3M black metallic wrap, but there was too much metallic in the vinyl and the regular gloss black looked better.
I am happy with this solution to the silver mirror caps for $15. It would have looked a little better to have them painted in matching BSM, but that would have cost at least $200. No one can tell they are vinyl wrapped. |

What ever possessed BMW to think that a grey-that-looks-like-primer was ever a match for any of the body colours? CF is better even on Estoril Blue, although I think EB would look as good.

Thanks for the complement. These are from AutoID in the UK: straight replacement tops, about £125 GBP here, the pair. See https://autoid.uk.com/products/carbon-wing-mirror-caps but I think you have similar, quality independent suppliers in the US. 2½-years later they still seem to be OK and certainly haven't discoloured etc. The video on the same page is really useful if you decide to go for full replacements, whoever the supplier.
My only other advice would be to wind-down the window glass before you start. That way you can perch the mirror on the top of the door while you replace the piece. Otherwise, it will fall off and dangle by the heating wires, which is probably not a good idea.

Pro Tip: To ensure they stayed on good, I applied some 3M double sided tape on grill before I attached the inserts https://www.amazon.com/s?k=M-Colored...ref=nb_sb_noss |

Am I the only one left with original mirror caps? Hmmm, maybe that will increase the value of the vehicle.

Carbon fiber would be been the way to go from the factory. It looks so much better with all colors. |

If these cars ever do become collector cars, then yeah, having original mirrors won't hurt. It's hard to imagine them becoming collectibles, though.

No. In fact, I painted my car to match the mirror caps!

Not a fan of the grey caps either. But I don't hate them enough to spend $200+ on a set of matching EB caps. Not really a fan of the CF or black either on my EB, so wrap isn't an option.
As for why BMW does the silver, it is a market positioning match to the Audi S series cars, and their silver mirror caps. The M Performance level of our cars is the same as an Audi S like an S3. And their RS line is positioned like a BMW M. But BMW really screwed up the specific grey color. The next time you see an S3, take a good look at the caps. They are a darker rich metallic grey color, with a nice depth to them. If BMW had chosen a better color, like maybe the same grey as the wheels, maybe we wouldn't hate them so much. But no, we get saddled with a cheap plasticky off-silver color that cheapens the look of the entire car. |
