It will tell you if you plug your VIN # into the BMW billing or owners' web sites.

It's super easy... pop your hood and look at the emissions sticker... you'll see your engine code there :-)

See link for picture of sticker

So I have the N26 engine. Would a stage 1 Dinan tune give me more noticeable street performance and not cause any long term engine wear issues as I plan to hang on to this car.

Yes. It wakes up the boost as well as supplying enough over-stock HP and torque to give you a much harder shove in the back when you step on it. It's a very well-balanced tune and will not cause excessive wear. Regardless of that, however, tuning your car can have a negative impact on resale value merely because of the perception that it's been driven hard and put away wet. Dinan S1 for the 228i is expensive but worth every penny because it's both aggressive enough for the street and refined enough to not to mess with the car's good driving manners.

Thank you. I am not really worried about the perception of thats it's been driven hard since I plan to keep it a long time. I won't be driving it hard all the time, just looking for a little boost. I could always take it off if I ever sell and besides me how would anyone know it's tuned.
