Hi All,

This morning when I started my car the left exhaust sounded very rattly. Got out to see if it was loose, couldn't visually see anything. So I decided to rev it not much but about twice to 4/5000 rpm and it just went away? Could something of been sticking inside exhaust? Never had this before.

Cheers

*FIXED*

I bought a new fixing bow for the sake of £8 from BMW and not heard it again, then one I took off had seemed to of lost its spring even though it looked in good condition. See below for more info hope this helps

Exhaust flap rattle, pretty common. You can get it fixed under warranty but will probably come back. Either deal with that or you can unplug the sensor while the valve is open

This part looks okay. Which seemed to be most common. Not had it again since this morning and started the car a good few times since then. Going to spray a small amount (not soak) of penetrating oil on it tomorrow see what happens

As you can see for a car manufactured in 2015 and on 50k miles, exposed to all the elements this looks to me in good condition. I'll just have to see if it occurs again. Will keep post updated.

That fixing bow looks good. Mine snapped & had it replaced under warranty by BMW. Noticed that it failed 1.5 years owning the car, brand new factory ordered.

I had the same issue with the rattle on my 2018 230i started to happen a few months into the lease. I don't feel like bringing it in until I have to for other maintenance.

I resolved the problem with suggestions from this forum and youtube.
Turn off your car when the flap is open. Remove fuse 146 from the trunk and your done. For m235/m240 remove fuse 147 as well.

Does removing the fuse throw any errors? Is this an alternative instead of actually physically disconnecting the flap cable which is under the car & exposed to elements? If so, then it would be extremely useful and easy to do!

No visible error codes. Not sure if there are some thrown internally.

This is an alternative to disconnecting the flap cable.
I don't feel comfortable for any moisture exposure due to disconnecting the cable.

Also note this might interfere with PDC if you have that option.

Thank you for this thread! Two weeks ago as I pulled into my garage at work, one of the attendants mentioned that there was a rattle coming from my car (I can't hear it with the windows up). It was definitely coming from the exhaust, and I found that the actuator and the valve were no longer connected; it was the loose valve which caused the noise.

A few days later, I saw this thread and the video which turned me on to the part I needed. I picked it up last week and installed it last weekend. Problem solved! Thanks everyone!
