Driving around town, the automatic transmission shifts way too early, keeping the engine under 1500 rpm, although it helps with gas milage, the car feels pretty much gutless because it has to downshift then accelerate. I was wondering if I shift with paddles at between 3000 and 4000 rpm, how much more gas is the car going to consume?

Try it for a tank and see, that's my advice. Also sport mode tends to shift higher.

FWIW, my car really likes driving in the mountains, and as a nice side bonus gets almost best-case mileage there (I typically get >25mpg on the tank through the ADK, usually in the 27 range). This is typically in sport, and paddle shifting well above 3k. By comparison, my few track days it is about 7-9mpg. Either of these could easily be 5 and I'd still consider it a bargain, as you can't put a price on the enjoyment.

There's actually very little MPG to be gained lumbering up to speed and much of the data suggests getting up to cruise speed quickly is actually better on MPGs than slowly accelerating up to speed. Low-rpm and moderate load is actually pretty fuel consuming rather than briskly accelerating through the gears to get up to speed. I say have fun with it as it's not going to be have huge affect on MPG.

Only reason I stay under 3k is because the car is warming up. Once oil hits 210F, I usually run out to at least 5k on acceleration, and I've been averaging about 21 mpg in city... But I also periodically partake in *more* spirited acceleration like the hooligan I am.

From 2002 to 2018, I was a hardcore hypermiler. It was an obsession that led me to own nothing but emasculated hybrids and one very puny EV. I obsessed over every fraction of a MPG and Kw. Every tankful and charge was documented during those arduous 16 years.

I have NO idea how I got so indoctrinated into that "economy-over-pleasure" phase of automotive austerity. So, when I got this BMW, I resolved to quit the pointless ritual of monitoring my fuel economy... and to rekindle the joy of my prior sports car days.

That decision was liberating. What's the point of having an M240i only to drive it like an accountant? Spending $50K on a fun car, and then worrying about saving $20-40 a month on gas simply doesn't make sense.

To the OP, Sport mode doesn't cause much of fuel ding. Depending on how/where I drive, no more than a 10-20% loss in Sport... not worth the sacrifice. I switch things up between Comfort and Sport. Sometimes 'ya feel like a nut... !

About every other year, when I visit my accountant for annual tax prep, he has a new BMW in his parking spot...usually some form of 3 or 4 Series convertible. From our chats, he drives above his station!

I drive mine like I stole it. I'm doing the Germans a favor. If you're not shifting near the redline, you're wasting engineering talent. We didn't kick their ass 70 years ago to squander their abilities. I enjoy burning hydrocarbons. I appreciate the sacrifice those dead dinosaurs made. Hypermiling is grounds for revocation of your "Man Card". They're communists, and deserve our scorn and ridicule. Blow their doors off at every opportunity. Electric cars suck. I find better gas mileage is sport over Econ - the minor pedal movement helps acceleration with a smaller hit to gas mileage.

I wouldn't know, I'm usually at 6k and in Sport. I averaged 22mpg on my N20 for the last thank. Ha ha.

I haven't been on this forum long, but never would have guessed that about you in a million years. The only thing myself and others need to "suck up" is the high cost of 93 octane. People always saying gas is cheap, but I'm paying up to $3.50 a gallon for the good stuff - and will continue to do so!

Here in Canada I pay the equivalence of 4.8 USD per litre for 87, 5.5 USD per litre for 91.

My cost per liter is $1.15 US for regular and $1.30 US for premium. About average across southern Canada. (Your numbers are reasonable for US gallons.)

$1.19 CAD for Shell 87 and $1.39 CAD for Shell 91 in Calgary at the moment - looks like you need more pipeline and refinery capacity and less carbon taxes

The US is the only large market that has a high proportion of large-displacement and otherwise high-powered engines, because it has the cheapest fuel prices of any large market. The smaller-displacement BMWs and other marques are not even sold here.
In markets where fuel is more expensive, fuel economy matters much more, which is incidentally why diesels are much more prevalent.
Of course, all that will fade away as electrics take over. Even the fastest electrics are much more efficient.

Is the gear ratio shorter for the m240 vs the m235? I recall exceeding 101.9 in 3rd gear in m235
