Today I got fitted the BMW 'LED luggage compartment light' Part No.63312348803



100lux vs standard original bulb at 20 lux. The photo' doesn't really do it justice in terms of being brighter. Makes the original bulb look pretty lame.

GBP £35.10 [Disclaimer: verified against my VIN and this may be a UK/EU-specific part number. There were two different part nos for the same item so may be variants for different models].

Had it fitted during a scheduled service and workshop also did a vehicle electric check as part of the fitting.

Our USA 228i is a coupe, so the light is on the "roof" of the trunk compartment, near the trunk opening. We have a light socket (with hinged cover) on the left side wall of the trunk. I don't see a spot for this. Just saved $50?

No, it's not the 12V power socket on the left of the trunk, if that's what you mean. In the photo' that socket is just off the left side of the picture. From the description on the part webpage, it implies it does also fit the coupé:

Note the section which says 'The light-directing technology is optimised for the installation position in saloon luggage compartments with central installation underneath the parcel shelf.' which is a bit ambiguous re. the convertible: and the photo' on the webpage looks like it's sitting in the middle under the parcel shelf - á là the coupé. In any event, the part 63312348803 fitted my convertible fine: on the dealer's worksheet it says

Replace boot light as requested:
X B63.31.2.348.803 - 111100/BMW LED lug 1.00 @ 29.95
I VHC 3.00
Carry out electronic vehicle health check
Carry out CitiNOW

But the link above is the end-point of me entering my VIN, so if there are different parts/assemblies for the convertible and coupé, then the coupé version may be a different part number. That's why I did the disclaimer - it's always best to use the VIN check before ordering anything.

Yes, my light is mounted in the central location underneath the parcel shelf.

This appears to be a replacement/upgrade for the clear plastic unit that came in my coupe. I put an aftermarket LED bulb in it so it's quite bright. An easy to install additional light would have been a bonus.

There is another LED unit without the more-noticeable array look you recently purchased.

Best price I see in USA is $50. Ouch. I bet it would be just as easy and a hell of a lot cheaper to put a bright LED bulb in the existing housing and a simple bulb swap.
