I got my 2017 M240i in early May, 2020 with about 1.5 years of the original warranty remaining.
First time I cleaned it, I noticed the black chrome finish was peeling off the chrome underneath. It was clear what was happening - exhaust gases and moisture had caused the finish to fail. Took it to BMW dealer #1. They took photos of it, had regional look at it, and decided it is not covered under warranty. BMW dealer #2 (50 miles away, in a different county) came to the same conclusion. This was extremely frustrating as BMW wants $150 for 2 exhaust tips that aren't going to hold up. There is no impact, no scratching, simply the finish failing as photographed. Over the past month, I've made 5 calls to BMW USA. They got progressively more and more annoyed and their official stance on it is simply "the exhaust system is intact and the finish failing was caused by an outside source. That outside source is moisture." Moisture. As in the moisture the car literally creates. How is that an outside source? They never did answer that question of mine. I've had several BMWs and I've replaced exhaust tips in the past out of warranty, but this is just unbelievable. I'll probably replace the tips with chrome to avoid this happening again and will definitely not be buying BMW parts for this.

It's you again.
Man, there is just no way I am settling on this one. (Especially given this is completely due to their half assed paint/clear coat process) I may go get mine replaced again just for fun, and tell them about how you've been treated with your issue. I can promise you if you come visit me in Chattanooga, my dealer here will take care of you. (Or we could go to Fields BMW in Orlando and get them swapped out as well) Shameful service by BMW, and I cannot believe someone hasn't just went ahead and taken care of you on this. |

I've never looked that closely at my exhaust tips. I guess this is one area I expect to be dirty and not worry about. That being said, the finish shouldn't flake off like that in 3 years.

Get the M performance exhaust tips, they are steel and are much more durable. Had mine for 4-5 years and after a good polish they looked like new again.

I don't think they fit the stock exhaust - there is a post that keeps them from being pressed all the way on. The stock tips have a slot that it fits in.

Glad my 2017 had the MPE exhaust and tips fitted. Truly a joke to see this on a BMW and not have them make it right.

I have five pair of BMS tips I'm going to list shortly for sale. I have chrome straight cut that I ran for a week, chrome angle cut (brand new, still sealed), black chrome straight cut, black chrome angle cut and matte black, ceramic coated straight cut.
