Black Kidney spray painted anyone do this??

Hi,
Has anyone just spray painted the kidney grills? Or is everyone just buying them? If buying from where? If painting what spray paint are you using?

Thanks

My neighbor did this on his old 325, it looks so bad, I would just buy them.

just sand paper everything down and follow the step by step process of a clean spray job. primer/ paint/ clear etc. should come out right. this'll cost you around $25. new grills are what.. $80? just get new ones and keep your stocks

You could also do plastidip, which will come out a more matte black finish, instead of glossy. You should be able to find some pics. This is reversible.

I plasti dipped also. Using the glossifier adds some sheen. It's not as nice as the OEM but good enough for me. Would be nice if they sold just the outer section by itself.

After spending $428 on tint for a lease I wanted to economize where I could.

Yea I have done spray painting before. Just curious if i can find black grills for 80 i am on the same page as just buying them. Not worth the time and effort at that cost. But i have not found them that cheap. Most are over 100 close to 130.

Check on ebay, that or you can get them on IND or getbmwparts website's. Those are both roughly 120

I'd use flat black Krylon with a special tip because the tips that they put on them spray too much you used to be able to get them off of clear coat cans but now you would have to order what they call a phantom tip. So the price of the spray can and the temp what you have to have an adapter for the tip and I don't even think they sell one tip you have to buy a package of them with them you could just buy some plastic black kidney grills that would look great.. besides the fact that if you don't have graffiti style can control you could very well leave drips or mess them up somehow

Holy necro, I spray painted mine (after removing and separating surrounds) with Rust-Oleum trim and bumper paint. It's a semigloss black, I only did this because I also painted the rear diffuser, spoiler and front canards in the same paint. One thing I didn't foresee was the paint chipping from rocks and showing the chrome underneath. I'll get around to buying the black grilles sometime soon, or when a few more paint chips tweak my OCD

I had IND paint the surrounds on a set of grilles, obviously high quality paint job. Still chipped. Definitely not work the effort of trying to paint.
