Extended Warranty 228i

Hi,

Curious if people have been getting extended warranties on their 2 series. I recently picked up a 2016 with about 18k miles and coming up on the 4 years next month. I've heard good things about reliability but I've only had it a month so haven't had any issues yet.

Prices for BMW warranties apron their site below, would appreciate any input! Should also add I'm planning to flash BM3 so will have to find a mod-friendly dealer for the powertrain I guess:
  • Platinum 5/75k: $2,600 (each year is +$800ish)
  • Gold 5/75k: $2,200 (each year + $700)
  • Powertrain+ 5/75k: $1,200 (each year +$400) - Seems like this doesn't fully cover anything?

I may be wrong here, but I believe the five year is really only one year after the 4 year manufacturer warranty and the 7 year is 3 more years. They are pretty expensive. Some dealers do offer better prices.

Yep you're correct, these would just give me one year for over $1,000. I doubt engines and DCT's are failing at 20k miles and anything else is doable but figured I would see what others have experienced.

This topic has been beaten to death many times on this forum and more generally. this long and the short of the matter is that the only people who usually benefit from extended warranties are the companies that sell them.
Put your bucks in a piggy bank and use them if you need a repair.
Also, make sure that you line up a reputable indy shop ahead of time to do the work when you need it.

While that's true - it depends on the vehicle.

A problem prone vehicle - the warranty pays for itself.

On something like a 228 (not a 235 or an M) would it matter? Is there a component that frequently gives out (besides taillights) that has an expensive fix?

I just got a call that my factory warranty was up, and they want $100/m for the next 36 months paid up front to reproduce it for another 36. And there are no deductibles or labor charges with that - a true fix it for free. If I went to 60 months it drops to about $90 a month. (it is refundable should you sell the car, ostensibly through them, for the balance unused).

I got burned by the maintenance 'package' where they cover brakes and oil changes etc. for the balance of the warranty and it never was used. (1 oil change needed and wipers does not a package make).

So the million dollar question is - what issues are there on 6 year old 228's (with about 60-70k miles) and how much do they cost to repair. Then you can do the math if its worth it or not. Form the forums one would assume they don't break. Not sure if that's realistic.

2015 228i xdrive 8AT with 75k miles and the only problem was the exhaust actuator flap...and i just decided to replace the OEM muffler.

i have the extended maintenance package and that’s already paid for itself given all the CBM needed as a high mileage driver. the timing and mileage should work for me to get the brakes and rotors done under the plan as well.

however it would appear that I didn’t need the extended factory warranty *knocks wood*

Good to hear - I did that flap as soon as I picked up the car and the tail light ground burned up a few weeks later. But that's all for now after 3 years.

Can't believe they want almost 1/3 the cost of the car for the extended warranty. It's egregious.

i didn’t pay anywhere near that amount for the warranty on my CPO. I think they initially quoted me $2k for the extra 2 years and 100K plus another $1500 for the maintenance...but i’ve bought multiple cars from the same dealer and negotiated down to $2300 for both the warranty and maintenance.

Well - they quoted me the same as you - but I didn't spend a whole lot on the car.
Their hard sale is that parts and labor are expensive and it's a hedge against their inflated prices should there be a catastrophe.
But this is an odd calculus, because they are asking me to take the bet - that I pay and pray it breaks so I get my moneys worth.
I feel they should take the risk, as the 'insurer', and take a lower price for the warranty assuming I'll never make a claim. Sure it's a gamble for them, but they sell lots of warranty's to make up the hedge, I don't drive lots of cars in case one stops working.
I would jump on the extended warranty in a heartbeat if it was only an extra car payment in price in total.

I have a 2016 228XI M Sport, and the only issues I have had are with the tail light group (like many others), and a few light bulbs that have gone out. Only 29k miles at this point, but so far so good.
