A Mini handles well because it has its 4 wheels placed as far out to the corners as possible, keeping most of its weight inbetween the axles and gives the car a longer wheelbase.

A short wheelbase FWD superminivan with a big engine hanging in front of the front axle will understeer like there's no tomorrow. Anyone who thinks some springs and shocks can transform a vehicle's dynamics should retake highschool physics.

The Honda is probably not bad for what it is, but don't try to make it into something it isn't.

I don't believe it has great handling, mini will be much better. Fit is too high and too narrow, it is like a minivan (may be better from a minivan).

Honda Fit might be new in US market, but this shape is about 2 years old in European and Australian market as Honda Jazz and in some other countires ad Honda City.

I am thinking about getting one for a runabout car....but I call them as I see them.....It is a 4door - very roomy for its class and size,peppy, reliable runabout car....

I want one because if the sticker is around 15,000 that means I can get one for around 12-13 and for less then 1/3 the price of my BMW I can have a reliable fuel sipping Honda for the price of a KIA...cant beat that...

I think it's funny how some of you can just sit here and snub the Honda Fit because it's a Honda and it's inexpensive. Let me tell you, my Integra GS-R was so ridiculously fun to drive, and it may not be as fast as my e90 or handle as well, or be as comfortable, but that thing was a blast to drive and I regret getting rid of it every day. Unfortunately my 6'4" boyfriend couldn't fit in it very well.

Don't think of it as a Minivan. It's smaller (on the outside) than a Civic.

It handles great because of it's suspension and meager weight.

A Mini will handle better, but has less usefull storage space.

Can you compare slalom speeds to compare handling? I think you might not be able to compare unless it was exactly the same track, well the Honda Fit says:

The article below (pdf) from Road & Track shows the '06 Civic Si, '06 Mini Cooper S, and '06 VW GTI 2.0T and their slalom speeds are 66.8, 66.2, and 67.2 respectively. So even if those aren't comparable to the Fit, it's apparent that the Mini is outhandled by a VW hatchback and a Civic.

Well, for a second there, your initial post about the engine swap and whatnot reminded me of those guys who always go: "DUDE! GET A 240SX WITH A SR20 SWAP!!!ONEONEONE!!111 or OMG! GET A EK9 WITH A K20A2 SWAP!!!ONEONEONE!!111."

Nobody snubbing the Fit because it's a Honda, I think most of us know that Honda has a respectable racing background.

This car can't be compared to a scion or matrix... It is a nice car... I've driven it in ARGENTINA(my hometown) My brothers GF has it... I'll say go for it... But 15K for that car is a lil over price...

I am a big fan of Honda/Acuras too and they are great cars and reliable too. I am sure it will be reliable. I loved the Integra GSR, I think the closest car to Integra is Civic Si with 200HP and about the same size as Integra.

I say go for Civic Si

I like the design of Civic Si better than the fit.
