M235i Overheating

Today while sitting at a drive-up window for about 7 minutes, my 235 overheated. It quickly progressed from the amber notification warning you to drive slowly, to the red warning saying to pull over and shut the engine off immediately. The A/C was off, and it was 90 degrees out. A little warm, yes, but this seems like unreasonable conditions for a car to overheat.

I have noticed that I don't ever hear the electric fan kick on. I checked all four fuses detailed on the fuse paper, but all are good.

Additionally, I have noticed that when stopped or driving slowly with the A/C on, the airflow stops or slows down dramatically, causing it to get uncomfortably warm in the car. Any chance these are correlated?

How else can I troubleshoot whether or not the electric fan works/comes on at all?

Thanks guys...yes service is on the list. Problem is the nearest dealer is 180 miles from where I live, so I wanted to see if there was something simpler I could look at before I take time off of work to take the car in.

Isn’t there a way to complete the circuit to test if the fan is working ?

Coolant is full, and fan spins freely by hand. As soon as I drive off and air flows through the radiator, the engine cools. I wish these cars had temp gauges...mostly I wish my 235's damn electric fan worked properly :

Take it to the dealer if you aren't too mechanically inclined.

Fans should come on with a/c.

The easiest way to check if fans come on is start the car with the hood down and listen for them or throw a piece of paper on the grille and wait for a visual sign. You could get one of the obII adapters and one of the apps to monitor temps and check for error codes while doing this.

It sounds like a fan not coming on issue due to your a/c getting warm. Your a/c's condenser needs to be cooled in order to produce cold air which is near your radiator...

Cooling problems are generally related to one or more of the following:

- electric fan not functioning or manual fan
- low coolant likely due to a leak or weak point in system
- Engine timing is quite off or fueling problem
- Head gasket leak
- Water Pump not functioning
- Thermostat not opening
- clogged cooling system

There's very likely an issue with the fan. There's been a few reported cases of the main fan failing (simply doesn't turn on) and it causes overheating and engine shutdown.

If you want to monitor coolant and oil temp, boost, ignition advance, check and clear basic codes, etc., buy the $5 Torque app and a BT ODB II doogle and monitor whenever you want.

Awesome! This is exactly what I'm looking for. Next soonest appointment I could get for the car is sept 1st, so anything I can diagnose between now and then is a help.

Also, do you know in those few instances what specifically the culprit was? Whether it be the fan motor itself, or the relay/circuitry?

It was the electronics in the fan assembly itself.
