Brake package mystery

I purchased a 2015 228I with the M sport package late last year. I began to feel a bit of a shimmy in the front end under medium braking and decided I would replace the rotors particularly since I am about to embark on my first track day with the car. Via a VIN look up I verified my car should have the P337A package, which is the M sport package (of course I didn't need to look up the VIN to know this, the car has the aero upgrades and other features of that package group).

What's confusing is, I have read that package should also include a slight brake upgrade to a 330 mm rotor but keeps the gray single piston caliper. I purchased 330 mm rotors which fit on the hub with no problem but I could not mount the gray caliper as the holes on the bracket do not match up after having to fit over the larger rotor diameter.

What's more, the rotors I pulled off the car were 312mm which is the diameter of the base brakes which I thought this car was not supposed to have. My first confusion is why my car doesn't have the brakes that supposedly came with the M sport package. My second confusion is I'm not aware of two different single piston gray calipers on our cars so I have to assume that the mounting bracket is different for each to allow the same caliper to fit over the 330mm rotor. Has anyone had any experience with these issues or any advice?

That 330mm rotor option with different caliper carrier only seemed to be available up to July 2014 (i.e., end of 2014 production). Here are the part numbers for the two carriers: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=34_1968

It also is unclear whether it is an option that was only offered on N20 engined 228i or whether it was offered on the N26 engined 228i in the US at all.

The Track Handling Package had the larger brakes titled “M Sport Brakes” with the 340mm rotors and upgraded calipers, these where the only upgraded brakes offered on 2015 & 2016 228i.

Thanks for the info! I hadn't been able to find that the larger brakes on the 228 were only offered for that short window. Appreciate the part numbers as well!

From the part numbers on RealOEM, it does look like the calipers are different, as well as the carriers for the single piston brakes with 330mm rotors.

The way I read it is two different calipers, one for M sport brakes and one for the M sport package. My hope is the M sport package uses the same single piston gray caliper as the base brakes and I can just order the caliper holders to accept the 330 mm rotor.

I had this same issue with a 2016 228i M-Sport. Selected the 330mm discs and the "M-sport" pad part numbers from getbmwparts.com, then entered my VIN and the part numbers changed to the 312mm discs and regular pads. Took my wheel off to check the part number of the discs and measured diameter, they were indeed what getbmwparts.com suggested.

Bought and installed, no issues (except getting the rear torque to yield bolts on the caliper carriers off was a royal PIA without a lift, I used ESCO jack stands so there wasn't much room to get proper leverage). Braking is plenty strong, although I don't track the car.

I think that the only real difference the between 312mm system and 330mm is Calliper carrier.
