EDIT: noise ended being the hand brake cable rubbing on the drive shaft. The cause is a cheap plast support along the line of the cable that broke. Its apparently rather common.

Got quoted for $600 to fix. $550/labor + $50 in parts. They claim it requires lowering the fuel tank a bit

Hi guys

I have a 2015 m235i. I recently developed a really bad rattle wich i finally isolated to be coming from the rear of the central tunnel/armrest assembly. It rattles every tume I accelerate. Definitley sounds like something plastic is lose or theres an object that somehow got in there.

Youtube link to sound clip:

Has anyone encountered this?? I'm in the proccess of disassembling the tunnel (see pics) but I cant figure out how to take the top of the phone compartment. Does anyone know how take it apart further?

Any recommendations or tips greatly appreciated

Cheers

do searches on here for info - I've seen somebody post the info on how to remove the console but can't recall where (also some online tech - I think this is the site w/ exploded diagrams if you can find the right section: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...epair-manuals/ )

I think this is the console R&R: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...soles/H1AJ9DzR

It's highly unlikely it's anything in the console. What exhaust mods do you have?

I had a hunch about that too. I'm running catless dp and reonator delete. U think it could be a loose bracket?

I found that the interiors of these cars 'throw' sound so that it can sound like it is coming from a different location. First (next) step would be to really go through and remove EVERYTHING that could rattle. I spent an hour on mine trying to find what was loose in the back shelf, only to figure out later it was the guts on my garage opener (fortunately it was before I got into taking things apart). .

It sure sounds to me like something is contacting a heat shield or support bracket as the exhaust rocks around in it's mounts under throttle. There needs to be around 1" clearance around the exhaust to account for movement. My guess is the resonator is hitting something.

It does sound like the heat shield. I had a similar rattling sound when I would make aggressive right turns. I just ended up bending the shield very slightly and that solved it.

That was my first idea. Gonna give that another try in case i missed something in the trunk.

Resonator has been cut out :
I lifted the car up. But no matter how much i wiggle the exhaust i cant get it ti make any noise at all.

You need to get under the car and inspect the clearance from the cat to the muffler.

Thanks for the heads up! Glad you figured it out. Watched the YouTube clip and man, that is one annoying sound. I wouldn't have been able to live with that either. No way.

Sorry to hear about the cost of the repair, but thanks for posting the cause. I'll keep that in mind in case I ever hear that noise!

I don't think this particular rattle is common as you are the first I've heard of in 2 years of being on this forum. I think "rattles" in general are a bit more common, but most seem to be related to exhaust mounting or interior speaker locations. Mine has a weird metallic rattle upon a cold start every now and again (suspecting exhaust), but once it settles down to normal idle, it goes away and doesn't come back again while driving. In fact, in terms of the interior, I think my 2-series is the most solid and rattle/noise free car I've ever owned.

I hate to jinx it, but +1 on the lack of rattles in this car. 4.5 years rattle-free and counting. A record in my very long experience of driving vehicles of all sorts.

Glad to hear you got a good one. I had 2 annoying plastic rattles i fixed on my own. Steering column shroud and the plastic hook covers behind the rear headrests.

I have to agree with u that my handbrake cable rattle can't be that common. I've never once heard of it on forums or from the many bimmer friends i have. Just happy its not the carrier bearing

Haha no worries bro. Just knocked on some wood for u. Its good to hear that there are good ones out there. Mine is 6mt. So obviously the hand brake was used more than most. And at 65k miles
