Shane beat us to the punch...

We did extensive testing upon development of our BMW downpipes. It now seems that a few vehicles are experiencing check engine lights due to a slow response speed from the O2 sensor. We incorporated an O2 sensor spacer which has proven to be extremely effective on many other vehicles that are known to be sensitive (ie: many Ferrari models). Unfortunately, it seems to be overkill for a select few of these BMWs. All of our BMW downpipes from here on out will not incorporate these O2 sensor spacers, as the HJS cats are doing the job superbly on their own.

To be clear the issue is not with the catalysts themselves. HJS catalyst cores are top-notch quality (German engineering and manufacturing) and are well suited for the job; we wanted to use the best for reliability and performance. We're the second largest purchaser of HJS catalysts in the world and we're proud to equip our BMW Sport Cats with them.

We apologize for any inconvenience and will push our engineering division further upon development to try and isolate any issues while pushing performance to the absolute max. If you are experiencing a check engine light, specifically P031F code, please let us know. We will replace your Sport Cat Downpipes under warranty and get you taken care of. Please contact us if you experience any issues.

Hi, is the catted downpipe legal for street use in California? Will it pass smog test?
I have seen that downpipes for other makes/models in your site explicitly mention that are illegal in CA, but I cannot find anything about the M235i.

AFAIK modifying the exhaust at all with anything other than OEM parts is illegal in CA. That said, we don't need to smog our cars for 5 years...

Axle back should be fine. Downpipe is definitely a no no.It really depends on the smog shop if they will pass it visually. Also, don't drive like a maniac and cops should leave you alone.

Hello again guys !

Basicly, same problem like everyone ! The code is P013F : 02 Sensor Delayed response - Lean to rich bank 1 sensor 2.

I don't buy at all the idea of having the 02 sensor damage. My car is new with 13000km on it and the Fabspeed Downpipes was installed at the BMW dealership.

The communication with them was very amazing until I send them the problem with the cel, but after looking at there reply on this forum, I'm pretty sure they will come back with a great solution. Thanks shane060 for sharing the Fabspeed respond.

We have redesigned our Sport Cat Downpipe to prevent the CEL from coming on. This redesign has been able to solve the CEL problem people were having in the past and everyone else should be taken care of.

I can confirm this. I was one of the first people to get and install the redesigned pipe and I have never had another CEL come back after the installation.

I was told that the issue that in the original pipe, there were some "spacers" engineered into the pipe. Turns out that the HJS Catalyst does such a good job of scrubbing emissions that the spacer actually causes the code -- i.e. a delayed response from the downstream 02 sensor. The redesign eliminated the spacer and put it back in a more stock configuration, which eliminated the P013F code.

So just order to your local BMW dealer clamps and gaskets in order not to have any leak:
  • Downpipe to turbo V-Clamp:
    BMW Ref: 1x 18 30 7 606 136 (20€).
    Tightening torque: 13 Nm.
BMW indicates in ISTA to replace it each time.

  • Downpipe to turbo Gasket ring:
    BMW Ref: 1x 18 30 7 581 970 (15€).

  • Downpipe to exhaust V-Clamp:
    BMW Ref: 1x 18 30 7 620 349 (15€).
    Tightening torque: 30 Nm.
To my mind, needed to be changed because the seal part of clamp is damaged when removed from OEM downpipe.

  • Downpipe bolts/nuts on its holder:
    Tightening torque: 28 Nm.

  • Exhaust on aluminium holder:
    Tightening torque: 28 Nm.

  • Lambda probes on downpipe:
    Tightening torque: 50 Nm.

It's a 50€/USD ticket compared to 1150€/USD downpipe cost...
Thank you SO MUCH for posting these.

Got a HJS Downpipe for my M2 ( arriving tomorrow ) and just ordered these for a clean install. Just what I was looking for.

Got my Fabspeed Sport Cat earlier this week. Been driving with it for a couple of days now. My thoughts so far:
  • More power. Very noticeable.
  • Much better throttle response. Less lag. Better drivability.
  • Raspier sound.

Very happy with this mod.
Easily a top 3 mod for this car.

I chose Fabspeed because it doesn't throw a CEL.
I already had a Dinan tune.

I always recommend Fabspeed for stock cars or customers using a piggyback that does not hide the CEL. Fabspeed has got the best success rate with CEL
