If you're going to DIY the OFHG you can't allow any debris to fall into the oil galley. A couple guys had their motors seize within miles of having a dealer do the work.

There is a TSB on pre priming the oil system that applies when you do the OFHG. If not followed, you may get the rod bearing problem.

33k miles on a 2014 M235i. I got a low coolant warning, and almost shit myself when I opened the cap... I overpaid and took it to the dealer, but I was sorta apprehensive about taking it elsewhere. The dealer does cover the work for 2 years too. Oh well, hopefully the new gasket is better quality, the dealer did say it was supposedly a different part than the original. Anyone have any luck getting BMW to pay for this? lol

70k miles here.....I've had some "oily dirt" in the ofhg area. no actual seepage, just dirty sand dust crap. should I be worried?

Oil Change after Replacement

On my 07" N54 -- where the (2) Gaskets look identical -- I flushed out the Coolant and Changed the oil after I replaced both gaskets. This time around with the N55 I plan on doing things a little more organized. Next spring I will replace OFH gaskets & replace WP and Thermo and even inspect the intake valves for possible walnut blasting.

A week later, after having my gaskets replaced, my coolant tank is back to being brown. Not sure if this could be residual, or if something worse/else is going on... I really hope BMW Service covers this.

Edit: Turned out it was just residual oil, but a significant amount. They flushed the system 3 more times with test drives/run time between to get more out. I wouldn't be surprised if more shows up over time, considering I'm not really sure how long it was contaminated for. Thankfully this was covered by the original service.

Replaced mine this year at around 52k miles, minor leak around the housing. This was on a 2014 M235i. Thank god for the extended warranty, it saved me 1500 dollars.

Just curious, how much did the extended warranty cost?

Less than 1 month after the 2nd round of flushes, my car had "low coolant" alarm again. Went to look into the tank, but the cap broke off. Apparently it's a 2-piece cap. Took it to dealer to have them replace it, and after they pulled the plug part out, more oil was present in the tank. Let's hope the 3rd round of service solves it... The service tech was saying "it's really hard to get all the oil out". I wonder if they are actually doing a detergent flush, or just trying to rinse it out with water or something...

I took my car to a 3rd party shop in Dallas to get a new battery. Had them do an overall inspection, and they informed me my oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets both leaking. 2014 M235i with 72k. I have an extended warranty, and dealer replaced both as well as the coolant hose (which oil had leaked onto).

The above sounds like standard N5X maintenance once the engine approaches 75-100K miles.

Question: How many replace their Valve Cover being that it is prone to crack around 100K ?

I think I will be replacing mine this time on the N55 -- where on my N54 I just change the VC Gasket. Which leads to the next question : Which Brand of Valve Cover to purchase???

Which 3rd party shop out of curiosity? I'm pretty much in line with you on mileage and similar maintenance history with my 235i (and also looking at doing the battery soon).

For the battery, I took it to Bimmers Only Dallas: www.bimmersonly.net

They also have a Plano location, where I've done an oil change before.

Anyone else have any experience with them?

I had the dealer inspect my valve cover, but they said it wasn't cracked. The 3rd party shop that discovered the leak recommended replacing it, but since I was getting the work done under warranty, of course the dealer wouldn't since there wasn't any current issue.

Guys on the N55 facebook group are using the JDMspeed valve cover successfully, some claim it's better than OEM. I believe it's $125 on Amazon Prime.

Was part of the CPO premium when I bought it. CPO basically paid for itself.

Car at the dealer having my oil filter housing gasket at the cylinder head replaced.

2015 M235 about 42,000 miles.

Tech said it wasn't too bad, seems it just started to leak.

I've have at least three "flushes" of my coolant, yet I'm still finding oil in my coolant tank. I've been pulling out as much as I can over the last couple of months and collecting it. I feel like this is not just "residual" oil any more, and today it looked like even more than normal. I just dropped it back off at the dealer again =(
