M235i 6MT Gear Ratios

Hello all,

I’m new to the 6MT’s and am wanting to better understand the gear ratio in this car.

My main questions are:

At what speed should you be at when downshifting in each of the gears?

How much should the RPM fall in-between each gear before releasing the clutch? (To avoid the car surging forward or bucking)

Is the 1->2 shift purposefully a pain in the butt in this car?

Appreciate any insight!

The 1-2 shift, yeah, but first gear is excellent for crawling in very slow traffic and 2nd gear is perfect for slow corners minimizing shifting. So the 2nd to 1st gear downshift is many times unnecessary for slow turns.

I need to test to be sure, but 6th to 5th at 50mph, 5th to 4th at 40mph, 4th to 3rd at 30mph and 3rd to 2nd at 20mph.

Usually a 1000 rpm drop when upshifting into consecutive gears.

Since your new to driving a manual you should probably be upshifting between 2500 to 3000 rpm.

you are probably going to get a ton of differing opinions on this topic, haha!

I have always found 1 to 2 shifts required more effort to be smooth in every manual BMW I've ever driven. double clutching can help once you master the skill.

depending on how I am driving I like to keep engine speed in a certain range. for normal/everyday driving, I like to keep it between 2.5 to 3.5k in most cars.

in the m235i though, you can easily go lower since the motor produces so much torque down low.
