Emergency Lights On Hard Braking
Anyone have any idea if this is something we have or can code into our cars if not? Is it against regulations?
If you're not familiar with this, it's something I noticed in a couple of cars while doing European delivery of my new BMW. The first time it happened was with a Mercedes that was in front of me during some heavy traffic in Berlin. The car came to a hard stop and its hazard lights flashed. The second time was on the Nürburgring when an M4 made a VERY hard stop in front of me (tire squeal involved), which triggered its hazard lights. I haven't been able to find any documentation, but curious if others have experienced it in their cars or know what I'm talking about. |

Yup, no hazards for us.
I noticed when I went to the ultimate driving event autocross and at the BMW Buttonwillow track event. It's just an extra set of brake lights that light up on hard braking. |

Thanks. I'd really like to enable this on my car as I think it really would help alert a driver behind me. I know when I saw it, it caught my attention. I wasn't distracted by it or anything. At first I just assumed the driver had flipped his hazards on manually until I saw it a second time on a hard brake.

In Germany it is the normal procedure, may even be law but can't remember as I stopped living there in 1994, to put on hazard lights when stopping in a traffic jam on the autobahn. This function would make that easier for sure, but not sure how legal it is in other countries.

I can't imagine why this would be illegal. It looks like a great safety feature to me. One earlier posting said in some states it is only permitted in "emergency or hazard situations". I would call an abrupt stop with brakes that are almost certainly bigger and better than the car behind you a hazard situation.

Not sure if it works if you don't have LED lights though... some people where saying that you get a "lighting malfunction" message if you set to flashing... I haven't tried it myself... if anybody does, let us know if it works |

I coded it on my car and it works well. The default US values is set to a very low threshold compared to the European values. Not sure what the threshold values really mean, but I think the value is set to 5 and it works fine for me. I've tested it out on an open road trying to determine how much brake force I need to apply to trigger it, and it only activates during medium/hard braking - meaning I'm depressing the pedal pretty deep.
I think the European standard is for this to activate only during what would indicate an emergency situation - very hard braking. The M3/4 that stopped in front of me on the Nordschleife was using full brake force when his activated. Seeing as how Germans are more attentive when driving, I think a higher threshold works for them. Here where everyone is literally texting on the highway doing 70mph with only two car lengths between them and the car ahead of them, a much lower threshold may work best

there are only 3 options 32 15 or 5..... so if you are going 80km/h you would need to drop to 65km/h if you have setting of 15... that's my guess but comments on the coding feature were not very explanatory |
