Hello everyone. New 2 Series owner here. My impressions.

Hello everyone. Just joined 2addicts yesterday and am very excited to be here. About 4 days ago I finally took delivery of my ordered 2 Series. It took a little over 2 months for the car to make it to the dealership. My configuration:

2016 228i Coupe
Alpine White
Black SensaTec
Brushed aluminum/black high gloss accent
Manual Transmission
M Sport Package
Lighting Package
Harman/Kardon
Moonroof
Black Kidney Grilles

All I can say is that I am absolutely in love with this car. It handles like it's on rails and I really think a lot of that has to do with the M Sport suspension and the staggered tire setup. It's wearing Continental Contisportcontact5 run flats with 245 in the back and 225 up front. The car feels glued to the road and tracks straight and true.

The manual transmission performs very well and the clutch is extremely forgiving. I actually think this would be a great car for someone to learn how to drive a manual transmission on...not that I'd let someone do it on my car. The throws are crisp and very reassuring. The Start-Off Assistant is extremely helpful and not only works for rolling backwards but also rolling forwards!

I really went back and forth on the moonroof. I love the moonroof because I like to put it in the ventilation position on the freeway and turn the climate control off. This helps fresh air come into the car. Coworkers told me it adds extra weight on top of the car and disturbs the lower center of gravity a little bit. I still decided to equip it as I'm not going to be tracking this car or anything of the sort.

I really feel like the Harman/Kardon is a MUST over the stock sound system. For $900 bucks, it's worth every penny if you're someone who enjoys listening to music in your ride.

The last BMW I had before this was a 2004 325Ci Coupe, automatic transmission. I honestly feel a lot of E46 in this 2 Series in terms of proportions and feel. Sometimes I just glance into the back seat area and I see my E46. I can say hands down that the 2 Series is one of BMW's last remaining "old feel" cars (besides the M cars) that has that fun, sporty, sublime character to it.

Very good and congrats on your 2er purchase! I too came from an E46 car. Feel free to add to the 2er map! http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1213096

Congrats, OP!

As you poke around 2Addicts you'll come across some conjecture regarding the stereo (many, including myself, feel that it's subpar in either Hi-Fi or HK guise), as well as a few other things. But the bottom line is that as a whole, the 2-series is a phenomenal small coupe. Drive it well, and often!

Congratulations!

I replaced my 2000 323Ci with a 228i M Sport and share your car buying priorities. It's a great car. Not perfect, but about as close as they come.

I didn't buy the moonroof but was tempted. The extra weight (30-40 lbs?) won't make any noticeable performance / handling difference on the street. Moonroofs are great on a cool night under the stars, but not so much under the Texas sun.

When I test drove the 228, and again shortly after I received my own, I was surprised by the low-end torque. I'd start from a red light as usual, not trying to sprint, and then notice in the rearview mirror that everyone else was still way back at or near the light! Was there some EMS vehicle that I didn't notice? No, this car has so much more torque on demand. My old 323Ci spent most of its life in 2nd or 3rd gear because it had o little low-end torque. Now, the turbo feels like going to afterburner. Whoosh. Bye bye. I imagine that coming from a 325Ci you also enjoy the thrust on demand.

The improved performance didn't impact my MPG. I only got 18 MPG with my 323Ci and now I get 22 MPG, mainly doing spirited "suburbs" driving at off-peak hours.

Besides being an excellent sports coupe, the 2 series just won top scores in CR reliability ratings and in IIHS crash safety testing.

Net: The F22 delivers E46 handling / size, more performance than you can use in most street situations, just enough bling, improved fuel efficiency, and Toyota-like reliability/safety.

I totally hear what you're saying about the HK in the 2 Series. It has 12 speakers and 360 watts compared to 16 speakers and 600 watts of the 3 Series Sedan and 4 Series Coupe.

It's so, so, so beyond that. Just sayin' (and I don't want to sully up this thread).

Read up on it all in this subforum.

(A little nugget: Some early 2-series owners received partial refunds for the $900 HK option because of how little it offers compared to other BMW models.)

I totally hear what you're saying about the turbo in this car! You can be in 3rd gear going about 25 miles an hour and put your foot down. After about 1 second, you feel the torque from the turbo kick in and it just pulls. Wonderful feeling.

Hey man...nice signature picture. Is your car lowered at all or is that stock height?

Nice build! I've always liked BMW's silver. Waiting for an ordered car is so difficult! But it's well worth it.

When I first read your comments on the H/K my first thought was that maybe they have improved it. My CA says no, so I'm not sorry. I'll go aftermarket speakers and maybe some other sound things, but mostly the engine is my radio.

Congratulations on your 2'er, I pick up mine on March 9th at the PCD, so I still have a wait. Actually, that's not all that bad with us in the midst of Winter here in Iowa. I, also nixed the moonroof. By the way, it's a bit more than that estimated 40lbs. Think glass, motor and roof window support. Whatever….anyway, as long as you're happy, same with me, that's what matters. Enjoy!
