228i (N20) Exhausts sound like stock?
I own a 2015 228i and have been looking into getting an exhaust and several other modifications done to the car. Around here exhaust wise it seems that most people recommend the Dinan Exhaust or the AA Exhaust. I am trying to get the exhaust to sound more robust and sports car like, but also still be able to be a DD. But both these exhaust when I listen to sound clips of them just sound like stock, or a little deeper on a cold start. Am I incorrect, and that is just the video sounding like that? Anyone with these exhausts on an otherwise stock setup that could give me some insight would be greatly appreciated!

What videos are you referring too? As far as exhaust is concerned there's 3 things that will make it louder: muffler delete, resonator delete, catless downpipe. There's a video on YouTube from GSR technik with an orange 228i straightpiped so you can get an idea of what it would sound like as loud as possible.
Personally I don't like the sound of the straight pipe, it's just too loud and on the N20 it sounds like a lawnmower. Personally I really like the sound of just muffler delete from what I've seen on YouTube. You can also modfiy the muffler by removing some of the sound deadening material and reattaching it if you want a more reserved yet louder sound. Getting the downpipe will let you hear the burbles and crackles but you'll get a check engine light unless you have a tune or you code it out. Catless DP will give you about a 10-15HP bump, and as long as the job is down well you won't get any nasty smell. |

Thanks for the reply, and yeah I saw that video definitely way to loud and annoying for what I'm looking for. I like the sound of a muffler delete but in my state I won't pass inspection with out a muffler/ fully straight piped. And I was just googling videos on youtube trying to find examples of the exhausts I was looking into. Thats why I was looking into the dinan and other exhausts but they all sound pretty similar to stock/ not deeper and louder but not excessive., |

Do you mind me asking how much that ran you? Also did you simply go to a muffler shop and ask them to remove the inside of the muffler and then remount it? Sorry, I have just never heard of this mod before.

Go to a muffler shop, the smaller Mom and Pop ones are the best, and ask them how much they would charge you to remove the large mesh section of the inside of your muffler and weld it back closed. There are pictures of said mesh section in the OEM exhaust mod thread. They should charge you around $100 give or take.
I mention the Mom and Pop shops because the cost to have my resonator chopped off and a tube welded in its place at a larger shop here was $60 versus $30 at a smaller shop further out from town. Just something to think about. Do some research and ask questions at the shop before you spend the money. I actually did the mod myself as I have access to a TIG welder and other tools.

I am happy with the exhaust note from my Dinan catback pipes. People (wife, kids, neighbours) notice it and tease me about it but it's not obnoxious, which is important. It's much sportier-sounding than stock. I live in CA and want to keep the car emissions-legal so no muffler delete or downpipe (which are too radical for me on a still-warrantied, high-end car anyway).

I went to three different shops one a local chain, a mom and pop shop and then a BMW tuner/specialist. All three turned it down. The local chain straight up denied it completely saying I might as well get a muffler delete, the mom and pop shop said they were too scared to try it, and the BMW shop said that while they had done this mod to e90's they didn't want to get involved * |

bringing this thread back to the top: any further options / resolutions to the rattling muffler syndrome?
admittedly, i poo-pooed all the fuss guys make over the sound of the car, but i'm getting on board after 18 months of ownership. are there any performance exhausts for the 228i that only require OEM muffler replacement? i really want to minimize moving too far aware from stock. i may eventually get a cold-air intake with a mild piggyback, but probably won't do much else to the exhaust. i don't want any burbles and pops, and definitely no persistent loud droning...

i daily drive my car 100-miles and i was a bit concerned about ending up with a constant droning from a non-OEM product. i had a local BMW specialist flat out tell me that he wouldnt install ANY aftermarket exhausts anymore because too many people regret it. i did enough research on this forum to get comfortable with the idea of something with a little more growl but i didnt want the constant drone nor the burbles & pops. active autowerke has a nice tone that's barely noticeable until you get on throttle, and it then produces a nice deep growl...and i love it. definitely recommended for anyone who wants a reminder that they're driving a sports car without being an overly obnoxious tuner-boi. and thanks to mike @ extreme power house for the recommendation and great pricing. ![]()

After living with a full muffler delete for the past 5 months on my '16 228i I honestly do not know why anyone would ever pay for an aftermarket exhaust system lol.
It sounds amazing, really minimal drone (speaking from the experience of a Texas to Pennsylvania road trip), and it is probably placebo but I swear the entire system just breaths better throughout the RPM range. Cheers! |

I too recommend the muffler delete. Cheap and effective, sounds awesome compared to stock.
