THANKS for posting this article.... fantastic. I drove a first generation N54 in a 2007 335i for 10 years and loved it for 200K miles...
I'm considering a 2017 M240i and this article was a great read!! Quote:

Also might be advantage to not have the separate HPFP line ( how many did I replace? ) and also removal of PIEZO FI...
More reliable? Less chance of fuel pump failure and injector failure? Both plagued me over my 10 year run. Quote:

I was interested in 228i stage 1 for track days but there are so many blown engines even in stock form so I'm bit sceptical about that N20. I hope B48 is a bit stronger. |

I've searched this forum (2ADDICTS) for reports of "blown N20" egines and can't find any. If N20's blow up as often as you imply, than one would certainly expect that some portion of 228i owners on this forum would have reported that here, n'est pas?

I'm sorry, I was probably overreacting because I'm really interested in this engine but those threads scared me a lot. Especially because I'm considering used car and I would like to drive it ocasionally on track with stage 1.
I've searched about N20 globally because this one from 228i has probably exactly the same internals as one in first F30 series. |

If you're saying that tuning the N20 well past it's engineering and design parameters, say, over 330 ft/torque - well, that would be a different kettle of fish.

He might have been referring to the issue that many N20 owners had with their turbocharger failing around 30,000 miles. Ours did. The compressor side shaft seal failed, causing oil to pool in the compressor housing. This gets invested by the engine on startup, producing copious amounts of smoke, and isn't great for your intake valves either (carbon build-up).

Same here. I had to drive 450+ miles to trade in my Mini for a 2022 F22…and it's been worth every mile.
I do miss a manual gearbox at times, but my family's got a 2019 Mini with a manual so I drive that when I miss rowing my own. Everything about this 230i -- I love it. It feels like a complete car to me. Personally don't have the need for maximum HP for my daily driver -- my commute is short. Just wanted a luxurious, fast fun car to throw around when I want to…and after having a 230i as a rental, had to have my own. |
