new owner of 2017 230i xdrive convertible questions

New owner of Bmw car wife bought while I was away on my BMW GSA motorcycle. I do a lot of my own Maintenace on my motorcycles.

Since I'm unfamiliar with this car. The maintenance records (bought from a dealer) seem to be up to date at the 78,000 mile mark. It is BMW certified. I bought a platinum Maintenace plan for two years. Yea I know I paid to much. Car seems immaculate. When does the timing chain need to be replaced or other parts like tensioner? What problems or known issues are with this car and what do I need to look at or watch closely. Is the car relatively reliable?

I would like to change my own oil and filters and have access to a lift. Do brake jobs etc. Any hints where to get filters besides dealer and other parts that are genuine BMW or Mahle like I use on my motorcycle.

Do I have the B46 engine?

Thanks for any help.

Hey, welcome and congrats on the new ride. Post up a pic if you get a chance later!

Check out the engine subforum at https://www.2addicts.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=531 B46 or B48 are basically the same 4 cylinder but one is SULEV (super low emissions vehicle).

The forum search isn't great, I usually just use google with a 2addicts or f30post prefix.

Just read the fine print in the powetrain warranty and if they frown on doing your own work... A lot of people order parts from FCPeuro for maintenance items. Also realoem is a fantastic site for part lookups. I think they even have motorad parts lists if you have a BMW bike.

I use https://www.getbmwparts.com/. My wife's 2020 230xi takes Part Number: PKB46OC2, The includes the filter and 6L of oil (it requires 5.6L).

FYI, there is another B46 oil change kit (PKB46OC, without a "2" at the end), but that one has the wrong oil filter for her car. Verify the correct kit by entering the VIN.

Congratulations on the new car!

One thing I would watch for is condensation in the tail lights. Mine were not sealed well and needed replacing. BMW did replace. The light style was changed in 2017 (mine is 2016) but a friend of mine has an 18 and it had the issue as well.

As mentioned above realoem is a must go to site when looking for part numbers. Other places to get parts:

Pelican Parts
Rock Auto
ECS Tuning

Amazon also has parts. I use Mann filters and usually get them there along with the synthetic oil.

Be careful of Amazon parts - there are many instances of counterfeit parts, from spark plugs to various filters. Not worth saving a dollar, to me.

Your car looks almost identical to our 2016 228. We have the N26 and are up to 83k miles. It's been extremely reliable so far. I have a local independent BMW shop doing our maintenance. It's been a great car so far.

Nice looking car.

Mine is a 2021 with red real leather inside with 56,000km on it.

I find the seat belt very far in the rear of the seat. My 440i had an automatic seat belt controller which helped me to grab the belt without getting me a sore back.

I have not drove the 230i yet since I bought it 1st January and stored it for the winter. Can't wait to compare it with my 440i.

My 330e gave me 2 liters per 100km for the past year. WOW!!

Cheers
