Preventative Maintenance For Our Cars

Hey guys was just wondering what is some preventative maintenance you do for our cars? are there any common issues that can be avoided by regular maintenance? Had my car for about 10 months now, put 12k miles on it and have done an oil change half way thru, about to do another oil change and brakes soon but was wondering what other people do.

Brake fluid - every six months you can siphon fluid out of the reservoir and add fresh fluid, and do flush every two years.
Windshield wiper blades - yearly
Cabin filter
Intake filter and air box vacuum out
Lubricate weather stripping with appropriate product.
Tire pressure and tire inspection.
Check trunk floor for moisture.

For M235, there are couple of things you can do.

Replace water pump at 50k miles.
Regular inspection for oil cooler leakage.
Upgrade charge pipe.
Check for coolant bottle for any leak.
Inspect valve cover oil leak.

If you read Roundel, which I assume if you're on this forum, you do, then you may be familiar with Mike Miller's "Tech Talk" column. You may want to get a free copy of his "Lifetime Maintenance Schedule". Bottom line, if you intend to keep your BMW past the included maintenance period, there are things that are recommended be done, since a BMW will cost you more to fix than a Toyota. So ya might want to do some things preemptively.

Great advice, read Mike's article.

If you just plan to get rid of the car when it hits 50k then just follow the BMW schedule. Otherwise spend a a few bucks to do some real maintenance.

You need brakes at 12k miles? Are you tracking?

Our cars are typically turbocharged so I highly recommend that you change the oil and filter every 5000 miles. This is what I use for oil:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's BMW LL01 FE qualified and it's a lot cheaper than the stuff at the dealer. Also, its base stock is class 4. What does that mean?

A bit of info: the B58 engine (M240i engine) uses 0W-30 synthetic oil everywhere in the world except the USA. Why? Mileage standards.

Class 1 and Class 2 oils: made from crude from the earth; not synthetic.
Class 3 oil: made from crude form the earth; synthetic (YUP)*
Class 4: made from synthesized polymer chains (aka "PAO").
Class 5: same as class 4 but the polymers are different (Redline oils are class 5).

Almost all consumer synthetic oils are made of class 3 stock.

* Class 3 base stock is made from oil from the earth. The crude is broken down farther than class 1 and class 2 oils. The class 3 base stock is then synthesized from the polymers.

Mike Miller's Lifetime Maintenance Schedule can be obtained by asking Mike for it at his Roundel email address: techtalk@roundel.org

I also have an Alternative Maintenance Schedule of Mike's that is worth reading through as well. I'm sure he'll send that out if he's asked for it.
