Love my 228i... I think of getting a 6 cylinder some times, but then I drive mine and it has plenty of power. Plus amazing MPG. I think long term it's going to be the better option for me. That extra 10k is going to be put towards a truck to complete my fleet.

What, you live in Texas and don't have a truck? How does that happen in Texas?

Seriously, that's a great way to go. While I love my m235i, I'd have been just as happy with a 228i. I often dream of adding a Dinan Stage 2 and MP Limited Slip Diff, but then think of everything else I could do with the $5K I'd spend on those mods. I highly endorse your plan. Even though I don't drive it much, I don't see how I could live without at truck.

I just hit 67k miles this week. I will be changing the plugs tomorrow. I've been getting a bit of an idle fluctuation. A third set of tires will be next and then a brake upgrade next spring. Aside from the driver seat outer bolster wearing pretty bad she's been awesome. This car will probably never leave daily driver duty. The next new car I get will be an M car or a 718 Cayman S.

i'll intro myself to the forum here since this seems to be the most applicable thread to my situation.

i just picked up my first 2-series...a 2015 CPO 228i xdrive sport pkg in mineral gray on coral red with 33K miles. i extended the factory warranty and factory service because this car will be my daily driver. i commute the DC beltway to the tune of 100-miles roundtrip. i average about 22K miles/year on my daily driver. so i expect to hit 100K miles on the odometer right as the extended service plan runs out in november 2020 (car went into usage in nov 2014).

the car has been a blast to drive since i just picked it up this past weekend. there are two "fun roads" that arent too far out of my way usual route home, and i've detoured each of the past two evenings for some spirited driving. i was previously commuting in a subaru crosstrek and just decided i wasn't having enough fun...the 228 has put a smile on my face for sure!

have owned and still own many bimmers dating back to 1991...

'87 E30 MT, convertible, bronzit (sold)
'92 E36 sedan, laguna green (sold)
'99 E36 MT, convertible, titan metallic silver (sold)
'06 E90 x-drive sedan, jet black (son's current car)
'07 E83 x-drive30 SAV, alpine white (sold; x-drive failure @80K mi)
'09 E91 x-drive wagon, alpine white (wife's current grocery getter)
'12 E89 Z4 s-drive28i MT, M-sport, black metallic, (current garage queen @25K mi)
'15 F22 x-drive coupe, sport line, mineral grey metallic (current daily driver)

i'm enjoying reading the forum and hope to hang around for a while.

For those of you doing a lot of highway miles, I just discovered ECO PRO works well at boosting highway mileage - at least 5% (had thought it was mostly for city stopNgo). I'd used it about 5 minutes total until I took a huge trip out west - now anytime I'm using cruise I put it into ecomode. Still Annoying AF for a/t else - it kills any engine braking, so I find it disturbing in heavier traffic or anyplace else I might just want to be making good time/economy.

Thanks for contributing to the thread. Quite a good BMW history you have. This is the most fun car I've had so far.

Took a long trip this past summer and had great results without cutting down the fun factor. I don't ever use Eco mode. Even on long trips I would still rather have fun. I've been tuned via BMS Stage 1 for the last 18k miles.

Im surprised you havent had an M yet. My m235i was the first bimmer I've owned and actually sold it after 3 months since it's release. I decided to test drive a f80 zcp and ordered one on the spot. I guess what im trying to say is, you should invest in a M and keep it longer

yeah...i guess i'm too much of a pragmatist to own an M. that's not to say that i haven't considered one. now that my son is driving (low mileage '06 E90 that we found for a steal), i've been thinking about something of a father-son project / track car...maybe an E36 or E46 M is in our future!

I was browsing and found this thread that I made a while ago. I thought I would update it. I'm currently at 70,700+ miles.

I changed out the stock spark plugs for new ones and learned some things about changing your own plugs. I got them from AutoZone and used my military discount to get them the next day for $53 total. I spent $12 on the correct thin walled plug socket from Amazon. Make sure you remove the top passenger side cover next to the remote battery terminals near the firewall. This will make the rear cylinder easier to get to. Check the torque specs in the BMWTis and the gap as well. My gap is different as recommended by BMS because of my tune.

I just checked the rotor thickness of all 4 brake rotors and they measured at about .96" for the fronts and .97" for the rears. The replacement measurement is .83". I ordered the StopTech Sport pads for the front and rear as well as the stainless lines from StopTech, guide pin boots, Ate SL-6 Low Viscosity fluid (2L), and a Schwaben pressure bleeder. All this stuff should be here next week.

I'm on my 3rd set of tires now. I opted to go with some sticky summer tires since I live in South Carolina and the weather is warm enough most of the year to warrant the extra cost versus A/S UHP tires. I went with the new Continental Extreme Contact Sports in 215/45/17 on the stock snowflake wheels. They have tons of grip and I like the lateral feel in the twisties. I can still break them loose with the tune and some aggressive driving.

Next on the list will be the 6MT transmission fluid. I will most likely go with the Pentosin FFL-3 which is LT-5 fluid even though the transmission has the yellow sticker that says Lt-3 on it. There's been some discussion in the forums about BMW changing the fluid requirement to LT-5 from 3. I also plan on changing out the fluid in the rear diff and will most likely go with Red Line 75-140 when the time comes. I will be doing a Blackstone report for these.

I'm still using the Castrol Edge Euro Formula 0W-40. It's LL-01 BMW certified. I will be using this for one more oil change and then I'm going to switch to Mobil Euro 5W-30 which is BMW LL-05 certified. Both of which I can get at Wal-Mart for less than $27 per 5QT jugs. I'm still using the stock Mahle filter kit. I'm going to do a Blackstone sample at the next change as well to see what the difference is after about 40K miles of engine time and to see what the Mobil does compared to the Castrol.

I still don't have any leaks anywhere or rattles. I daily my car about 40 miles round trip, 5 days per week city driving. My mileage did drop quite a bit from a 32mpg average to a 23.8mpg average. I guess I have been enjoying the new tires and tune a little too much lately. I did try to drive in Eco a few times to and from work but that didn't last long at all. Ha ha....

Sorry for the long post. Have a great Easter and I hope this helps someone else.

So I changed out the trans fluid and diff fluid today. I took a sample to send to Blackstone Labs for testing. The diff fluid looked about the same.

Thanks for the update. Hope the results all come back good, I'm sure they will.

Did you remove the diff cover, or did you just suck out the fluid?

I just sucked out the fluid and then squirted the new fluid in and let some of the old fluid run out. I don't have the LSD. The diff only took 1 qt of fluid. I used Mobil 1 75W-90 Full Synthetic LS. I have used a similar Mobil 1 heavy weight diff fluid in CAT mining equipment and it's pretty amazing stuff.

I log all my fuel fills and record calculated mileage based on miles covered divided by gallons used and my overall average mpg in 24K miles his around 22 mpg with my best tank-full at 31.98 mpg (all interstate highway cruising at about 70 mph) and my worst tank-full at just over 20 mpg.

Remember though that I have the 228i with the N20 4 cylinder and not the M235 with the N55 6 cylinder.

Off warranty now, 4 years have passed since I got the car. 70,000km, zero issues other than the idrive getting cold at -30c and rebooting once or twice a winter. Driven it in all weather conditions.
